Evidence for Biography

Essay

Evidence/support: Facts, Logical statements, statistics, and quotes from sources that support your main argument.

How do I know if it is proper evidence?

Ask yourself:-Is it relevant to my

main argument?-Does it support my?-Does it encourage the

reader to agree with me?

Three Ways to Cite a Source

1: Direct Quote2: Paraphrase3: Summarize

Direct Quotation: Using exact words from a source (author) to support your own argument.

Book or Signed Article “Encouraged by the government, tourism is one of the largest industries in Greece” (Arnold 45).

Online Source (No Page Numbers)

“Hinduism and its mythology are a mixture, resulting from centuries of cross-cultural integration” (Naylor).

Online Source (No Author or Page Numbers)

“He interviewed seven US presidents, co-hosted for a week with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and featured future golf champion Tiger Woods at the age of two” (BBC News).

Paraphrase: Rewording or rephrasing a quotation from another source (author).

Book (author mentioned in text)

Arnold states that tourism, encouraged by the government, is one of Greece's largest industries (45).

Online Source (No Page Numbers)

According to Naylor, the mixture of Hinduism and its mythology is a result of cross-cultural integration.

Author

Summarize: To make a general

statement that explains the source’s (author’s) main idea/argument.

Using only key information using your own words.

Original Text:"The play does not mirror, or reflect, or

state; it embodies, and often puts us at a loss to enunciate the ideas and feelings it calls forth. That's the thing about [Death of a] Salesman: it reverberates, echoes, resonates. Its rhythms roll deep down toward and into American desires and delusions" (Heyen 47).

Summarized Passage:Death of a Salesman has the power to embody the emotion of the American dream, regardless of how incomprehensible it may seem (Heyen 47).

How to Cite Evidence

Psss, I have a secret… use the DBQ method Jara taught you!

1: Thesis: Introduce argument

2: Evidence: Direct quote, paraphrase, or summary.

3: Explanation: A straight forward connection between your argument and you evidence.

Example

Death of a Salesman has the power to embody the emotion of the American dream, regardless of how incomprehensible it may seem. “Its rhythms roll deep down toward and into American desires and delusions” (Heyen 47). In essence, members of our society shoot for a goal to achieve the “American dream”; however, it is nearly impossible for many, and not as rewarding as it may seem.
