WHAT IS SHE TALKING ABOUT?
In other words:• No matter what the form of the text (visual, audio, words)… I will read
like a forensic detective, looking for clues, noticing all the important details and the details that are missing
• Like an investigative reporter, I will question what I observe, as well as what I do not observe and communicate those answers so that others will know what I am talking about.
• I will pause along the way to make sure I understand what I have to do• By the time I finish reading “Of Mice and Men” I will be able to write
an essay about the ending of the novel and be able to provide support citing details from these visual text and audio text lessons to support my position. I will be graded using the FSA writing rubric. (Available on the web site).
Academic Terms in this Unit
• MOOD• PARODY • SATIRE• IRONY• METAPHOR• PERSONIFICATION• ALLUSION• CITE
• ALLUSION• THEME• GENRE• FORESHADOWING• FLASH BACK
By the end of the unit, I will have a good understanding of what each of these terms means; I will be able to identify examples of each of these terms and explain how their use deepens the meaningof the text
REVIEW - DAY 1
Who do you think these people are?Where do you think they are?
Who do you think they are talking to?
READ THE FOLLOWING “QUOTE”"I was walking down the road with two friends when
the sun set; suddenly, the sky turned as red as blood. I
stopped and leaned against the fence, feeling
unspeakably tired. Tongues of fire and blood stretched
over the bluish black fjord. My friends went on walking,
while I lagged behind, shivering with fear. Then I heard
the enormous infinite scream of nature.”

• What do you think the connection between this text and the
image on the previous slide might be?
WRITING ABOUT THE “QUOTE”"I was walking down the road with two friends when
the sun set; suddenly, the sky turned as red as blood.
I stopped and leaned against the fence, feeling
unspeakably tired. Tongues of fire and blood
stretched over the bluish black fjord. My friends went
on walking, while I lagged behind, shivering with fear.
Then I heard the enormous infinite scream of nature.”
• Read the text again and pay close attention to the images
that form in your head as you do so. Capture these images
on paper.
DAY 2
Read the following information, then view the oil painting on the next slide
Between 1893 and 1910, the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944) did several versions of "The Scream,” in oil, pastel, and
lithograph. Compare the different “moods” and effects of this
painting. Does the difference in “art” medium change the effect? For example, does the stark contrast of the black-and-
white lines in the lithograph (next slide) mirror the disconnect between the man's mood and the peaceful surroundings more effectively than the other versions
(subsequent slides)?
HOW DOES THE QUOTECHANGE YOUR VIEW?
"I was walking down the road with two friends when the sun set; suddenly, the sky turned as red as blood. I
stopped and leaned against the fence, feeling unspeakably tired. Tongues of fire and blood stretched over the bluish black fjord. My friends went on walking, while I lagged behind, shivering with fear. Then I heard
the enormous infinite scream of nature.”
Two years later, Munch produced the black and white lithograph. Why? Use evidence from the paintings and
Munch’s quote to support your ideas.
THE “QUOTE”According to Munch’s personal diaries, the idea for the modern art painting The Scream came to him while looking down over the Norwegian landscape
from an elevation. While a mountaintop or a scenic view from a summit might sound like a beautiful natural landscape to paint, Munch’s personal
interpretation of “nature” below was very different than you might imagine."I was walking down the road with two friends when the
sun set; suddenly, the sky turned as red as blood. I stopped and leaned against the fence, feeling
unspeakably tired. Tongues of fire and blood stretched over the bluish black fjord. My friends went on walking, while I lagged behind, shivering with fear. Then I heard
the enormous infinite scream of nature.”Have you ever responded to “nature” in this way?
Describe.

Sold for millions at Sotheby’s… why? What is it about this painting?
Is it the haunting expression of the androgynous figure? The wispy curves of the face and fiord? The blood-red sky?
Do you think the painting’s aesthetic value justifies the sale price?
