Expressions

How do I evaluate expression?

This will be an explanation of what expressions are and how to evaluate them.

Evaluating Expressions

2+3n2 is the constant, meaning it will never

change3 is the coefficient, meaning it is the number

in front of, or goes with, the variable.n is the variable, meaning that this number

may vary. Variables can be any letter of the alphabet.

Evaluating ExpressionsParts of an expression

Evaluating ExpressionsHow do I do this?Always evaluate

expressions from left to right.

Use the acronym, P.E.M.D.A.S., or, Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. This means: Parenthesis(grouping symbols, exponents, Multiplication and Division (left to right) and Addition and Subtraction(again, left to right).

3t+7 when t = 5Substitute 5 for 3: 3(5)+7Multiply 3 and 5: 15+7Add 15 and 7: 22 is the answer

Evaluating ExpressionsExample 1

5+5n when n = 3Substitute 3 for n: 5+5(3)Multiply 5 and 3: 5+15Add 5 and 15: 20 is the answer

Evaluating ExpressionsExample 2

3n-(-2) when n = 2Substitute 2 for n: 3(2)-(-2)Multiply 3 and 2: 5-(-2)Change the signs from – and (-) to ++: 5+

(+2)Add 5 and 2: 7 is the answer

Evaluating Powers: How do I evaluate powers?

• When you evaluate powers you take the base times its self as many times as the power says.

Evaluating Powers: Step by step

• Step 1- look at the base.• Step 2-you look at the power.• Step 3- take the base times its self as many

times as the power says.

Order of Operations

Rabe, Taylor Cox

Key Concept

How to use the order of operations to evaluate expressions

P-parenthesis E- exponents M/D- multiply and/or divide A/S- Add and/or subtract

How to Do It.

First, evaluate expressions inside parenthesis

Next, evaluate powers. Then, multiply and/or divide from left

to right. Finally, add and/or subtract from left to

right.

Examples

50-5x42÷2 ¾ [13-(2+3)]2

50-5x16÷2 ¾[ 13-5]2

50-80÷2 ¾ [8]2

50-40=10 ¾ (64)=48

Key Concepts

• To translate verbal phrases and to expressions, look for words that indicate mathematical operations

How to write Expressions

There is many different ways to write aexpressionStep 1: Write a verbal expressionStep 2: Translate the verbal model into an

algebraic expression.

Examples

“5 less than the sum of 5 and z.(5+z)-5 z=5(5+5)-5(10)-55

Examples

• “The Difference between 52 and 3 times x”• (52-3)x x=2• (49)2• 98

Example

• “5 Times the difference of 8 and x • (8-x)5 x=10• (8-10)5• (-2)5• -10

ALGEBRA USED IN REAL LIFE

There are many different ways algebra is used in real life

Here are a few

Trajectory of Projectiles

D=v(t)

D= distance V= velocity T= time

the bullet will hit the ground at the same time as the bullet that is dropped from the same height.
