The Fleet Electric Vehicle Pool

Why is it risky to put your EVs in the pool?

Electric Vehicle Fleet Modelling Project with Plug-in BC Matching the right EV to the right duty cycle with fleet operators in the province of British Columbia

Price of gasoline in British Columbia is rising

Electric Vehicle Fleet Modelling Project with Plug-in BC Matching the right EV to the right duty cycle with fleet operators in the province of British Columbia

In North America: • Vehicles spend 20% of their driving time idling • >32% of vehicle owners would financially

benefit from electric powertrains • <3% of vehicle purchases are hybrid or electric

Electric Vehicle Fleet Modelling Project with Plug-in BC Matching the right EV to the right duty cycle with fleet operators in the province of British Columbia

The EV utilization challenge for fleet operators

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) need to:

• Be range capable for their

fleet application, while keeping the vehicle utilization up

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) need to:

• Maximize their electric

driving as a proportion of total utilization

What do we do?

Part 3 How we do what we do

Electric Vehicle Fleet Modelling Project with Plug-in BC Matching the right EV to the right duty cycle with fleet operators in the province of British Columbia

3 Step Approach to Successful EV Integration

(1) Data log existing fleet of vehicles

(2) Test your duty cycle data in

FleetCarma’s EV computer models

(3) Modelling results are reported in a user-friendly web portal, including

a ranking of the best-fit EV for each duty cycle examined

Will EVs be capable to do the job? Will they save fleet money?

How are vehicles currently used in the fleet?

Which EV technology best matches fleet needs and optimizes TCO?

The Focus EV is the only BEV that is 100% range capable

Electric Vehicle Fleet Modelling Project with Plug-in BC Matching the right EV to the right duty cycle with fleet operators in the province of British Columbia

Results from Plug In BC assessment

Sample size: • 9 fleets assessed • 123 duty cycles vehicles monitored • Baseline fuel consumption ranged from 6.0 L/100km to 34.9 L/100km • Annual utilization ranged from 901 km/year to 69,000 km/year EV capabilities: • Only 6% of the duty cycles logged would have not been range capable with at

least one of the all-electric vehicle options • In 81% of the duty cycles logged, the best-matched EV was fully charge capable

with a Level 2 (240 Volt, 30 amp) charging station.

Using EVs with a 7-year service life: • Fuel cost savings from baseline: $1.4M • Maintenance cost savings from baseline: $77K • Emissions Cost Savings: $87K • Total electricity added to the grid by converting these to EV: 732 MWh • GHG emissions reduction potential: 3,527 tonnes of CO2e
