Phylum Chordata:EutheriansMarsupials

Phylum: Chordata(Eutherians)

CHARACTERISTICS..placental mammals + all extinct mammals that are more

closely related to living placentals (such as humans)- mostly rodents and bats.

covered with hair, have an extra brain layer (cortex). endothermic ("warm-blooded"):body temperature

slightly higher than marsupials and monotremes.live young-nourished before birth in the mother's

uterus through placenta. –complete embryonic development within mother (vivipary).

lack epipubic bones

Eutheria’s Habitat

found on all continents, in the air, and in the seas

EXAMPLES

Phylum: Chordata(Marsupials)

Unique characteristics: Have pouches(marsupium)Have nipples that produce milkMarsupials do not nourish their embryos with a placenta.Give birth to live youngHigher metabolic rate

Female marsupials have a double reproductive tract.Uterus and vagina are biphidEpipubic bones (both sexes; whether or not they have pouches)

Marsupial’s HabitatLiving primarily in the Southern Hemisphere.

Marsupials are mostly (but not solely) found in Australia. They inhabit a variety of biomes, including rainforest, bushland, alpine regions, grassland and desert.

They are not found in marine habitats.

Examples of Marsupials

Kangaroos

Opossum

Koalas

Tasmanian Devil

SIMILARITIES

Eutherians Marsupials

Vertebrates, warm-bloodedhave fur, skin or hairbreathe through lungs (not gills)the young feed on mother's milk

DIFFERENCES

Females having one uterus, one vagina and one cervix

Female have two uteri, two vaginas and two cervices.

have an extra brain layer (cortex)

small and narrow braincase (houses a relatively small and simple brain)

fetus inside the uterus often have pouches to carry their youngs

embryonic development in the uterus(young nourished by placenta)

young are born undeveloped -continue most of their growth and development whilst in the mother's pouch

SUMMARY

Fun facts about Eutherian

exist in many different environments, mainly because there are so many different species!the dominant species of mammal, with more species than marsupials or monotremes.Placental Mammals were widespread in North America during the Ice AgeHumans and regular animals in human life are placental mammals
