Over ProductionDuring WWI, industries such as mining, lumbering, and agriculture had expanded. After the war, demand fell. Since the supply was greater than demand, these industries lost money and workers lost jobs.

Credit StructureDuring the 1920’s, many people wanted to have new products that were becoming available, e.g. cars, refrigerators, radios.

They didn’t have the money, so they bought on credit. People owed a lot of money, and when they couldn’t pay, the companies and banks they had borrowed from lost money.(Text pages 464-471)

Western Migration of Farmers During the Great Depression

Farms in the Midwest failed and farmers and their families moved west, especially to California. There was not enough work in California and they were not treated well.

The failure of farms was caused by hail (1930), drought (1932 to 1935), mismanagement and degradation of land, falling prices of agricultural goods, overinvestment in farming equipment, overextension of credit.
