ESAComp for Enhancing HyperWorks in Composites Design
4 - Element loads and properties are
avai lable in ESAComp for further
investigation of details. Through-the-
thickness plots illustrating stress, strain
levels, or reserve factors, for the layers in a
single element provide valuable insight on
what are the critical mechanisms and how to
possibly improve the lay-up. Further,
dedicated modules for bonded and
mechanical joints are available.
2 - ESAComp makes use of HyperMesh comments, in
supported profiles, to ensure seamless transfer of object
names. Laminates can be modified and applied to your
structure, or updated within an optimization loop using
ESAComp's batch capabilities, which also makes it very
powerful for repeated tasks.
1 - ESAComp not only enables efficient laminate
build-up and evaluation using materials from its vast
databank. These lay-ups, including material data, can
also easily be exported easily to HyperWorks in
various solver profiles, e.g. OptiStruct, NASTRAN,
Abaqus and ANSYS.
3 - After solving, element data can be transferred to
ESAComp for composites post-processing using the
advanced failure criteria implemented in ESAComp,
such as Puck 3D and LaRC03. Results for reserve factors,
critical layer and type of failure at element level can be
visualized in HyperView, as well as results at ply level.

ESAComp allows you to...
ESAComp licensing
Analysis and design software for layered composite
structures
For material selection, conceptual and preliminary
design, analyses of details, …
Stand-alone tool that interfaces with general finite
element packages
Originally developed under contract for the European
Space Agency (ESA) to meet the needs of the aerospace
industry
Today used worldwide in all industries utilizing high-
performance composites
Explore possibilities. The combinations of composite
material systems and structural concepts are limitless.
The ESAComp Data Bank gives a good basis for trying
potential materials for a design. The analysis capabilities
of ESAComp allow performing trade-off studies, for
instance, between the use of solid laminates, sandwich
panels or stiffened panels.
Be efficient. Use the right tool for the different phases of
the project. The FE environment is not ideal for laminate
level studies or lay-up design. In the early phases of a
project, the structural elements of ESAComp allow fast
analysis without a full geometric model.
Avoid pitfalls. Designing with composites is a challenge.
For instance, a potential failure mode can be missed
easily without a careful assessment of the structure.
ESAComp complements the capabilities of FE tools in
doing this. Advanced ESAComp capabilities like the
probabilistic analysis may become handy in verifying the
real performance of the design.
Optimize your design. Besides the user environment that allows practical hands-on optimization of designs,
ESAComp integrates as part of more complex
optimization systems.Learn about composites. ESAComp helps structural
engineers with limited composites experience to get
familiar with the topic. For composite experts, the in-
depth capabilities of ESAComp mean there is also
something new to learn.
ESAComp FE export interface allows transfer of
materials and lay-ups to HyperWorks (use of ESAComp
Data Bank, environment dependent material data,
practical user interface for lay-up definition, laminate
design capabilities, …)
Material and laminate data is exported in solver
dependent format for various HyperWorks supported
profiles (OptiStruct, NASTRAN, Abaqus, ANSYS, LS-
DYNA).
ESAComp post-processing interface in HyperWorks
allows transfer of FE results and related material and lay-
up data to ESAComp for failure analysis and for further
visualization of results in HyperView (application of
advanced failure criteria, visualizations of failure modes
and critical layers, through-the-thickness plots in
ESAComp, design improvement using ESAComp tools,
…)
ESAComp post-processing is available in HyperWorks
12 and further enhanced in HW 13. Currently supported
solver profiles include OptiStruct and NASTRAN.
ESAComp is available on-demand through Altair Partner
Alliance - paid-up and lease licenses through
Componeering and its distributor network.
Interfaces for HyperWorks are included in the base
version of ESAComp under all licensing approaches.
