Topic 2(a): Religious building around the world

St Mark's Basilica, Venice, Italy  The Glorious ‘Church Of Gold’ In Venice.

St. Mark’s Basilica

• - It was founded in the 9th century• - Located inside the ‘Doge’s Palace’ complex & was constructed in 828 AD.• - To shelter the relics of ‘St. Mark the Evangelist’• - The chapel inside the complex was burnt down in 976 AD.• - It was restored twice in 1070 which had given today’s look.• - This magnificent basilica was built when the Venetian dynasty was at its peak of

wealth.

Structure and layout of St. Mark’s Basilica

The plant in Greek Cross exempt creates a structure in the longitudinal part of the ship known for certain architectural motifs.

The geometric organization is regular and the positioning observes the principles of symmetry.

Types of ornamentation used

Rood-Screen and Sanctuary(The choir stalls)

- The four columns supporting the ciborium decorated with 324 reliefs showing the scenes from the life of Jesus and Mary.

The Pulpit

- One of the Basilica’s greatest ornaments.

- Designed by Victor Bourgeau .

 Victor Bourgeau (1809–1888) designed this pulpit .

Gilded lion of St. Mark

-The symbol of evangelist St Mark and emblem of  the Venetian City State.

- Carved in wood and plaster.

Horses of Saint Mark/ “Museo Marciano” 

- Known as the Triumphal Quadriga

- A set of bronze statues of four horses.

-Use of porphyry can highlight the political greatness of Venice and its glory.

- Symbol of power.

Porch and Gallery

- Provides a foyer before entering the main church.

Inlaid Marble Floor

- Most of the floor is geometric, it is lightened occasionally with intricate animal and floral designs made with tiny pieces of marble or even glass.

Interior and MosaicsThe Exterior

- It has a majestic look.

- The exterior western façade of the basilica can roughly be divided into three parts- Lower, Upper & the Domes.

-Enough to cover over 1.5 American football fields.

- Mostly are made in gold.

-  The light makes the colors, and scenes, look different.
