2 How to backup in ECL
We explain about how you had better build the environment of backup and restore in
ECL.
To understand, we show you some example.
Besides, we also explain about configuration of Acronis backup such as Local and
Centralized management.
2.1 Explanation of Backup
There are many configurations in each environment of customer. You have to
decide your point of backup to protect your environment.
In here, we give you some information to understand regarding backup.
① What do you want to backup? (Consideration of storage size)
Items Usage
Disk/Volume
(Image Backup)
・You want to protect a whole server or system area.
・There are many files and folders to protect in your
server.
・There are many servers to protect in your system.
File/Folder
(File Backup)
・You want to protect particular files or folders only.
# You need to consider retention period of backup archive file.
Enterprise Cloud User’s guide for Backup License/Acronis ver1.3 ).35
9
② How do you want to backup? (Consideration of backup time)
Type Explanation Merit Demerit
Full A full backup stores all data
selected for backup.
A full backup underlies any
archive and forms the base for
incremental and differential
backups.
Recovery time is short.
Possible to recover if
any archives have
broken.
Backup time is long.
Backup size is large.
Incremental An incremental backup stores
changes to the data against the
latest backup.
You need access to other backups
from the same archive to recover
data from an incremental backup.
Backup time is
shortest.
Backup size is
smallest.
If one backup in the
"chain" is
corrupted, the next
ones can no longer
be used.
Differential A differential backup stores
changes to the data against the
latest full backup.
You need access to the
corresponding full backup to
recover the data from a
differential backup.
Backup time is short.
Backup size is small.
If you frequently
change from latest
full backup, backup
size becomes large.

10
2.2 Pattern of backup destination This part had better use when you consider use of Acronis in ECL.
We give you some typical patterns as example.
Enterprise Cloud User’s guide for Backup License/Acronis ver1.3 ).35
11
2.2.1 Pattern1
You cannot backup to vHDD of server for backup. However you can select different
server as backup destination.
【Point】
You can backup and restore at a low cost.
If you improve your security, you had better consider regarding pattern2 or
pattern3.
【Recovery area】
Pattern1 intends for problem of a single server. It cannot handle malfunction of data
center and natural disaster.
Enterprise Cloud User’s guide for Backup License/Acronis ver1.3 ).35
12
2.2.2 Pattern2
If you have already used colocation service, you can select your server or storage as
backup destination.
【Point】
Pattern2 is more secure than Pattern1 because you can store data out of compute
resources.
If you do not contract colocation service, you need to contract.
You have to pay attention to network bandwidth.
If you improve your security, you had better consider regarding pattern3.
【Recovery area】
Pattern2 intends for problem of a single server or cloud infrastructure.
It cannot handle malfunction of data center and natural disaster.
Enterprise Cloud User’s guide for Backup License/Acronis ver1.3 ).35
13
2.2.3 Pattern3
You focus on security and you need to recover even if malfunction of data center or
natural disaster occur.
In this case, you should select GFS as backup destination.
【Point】
Pattern3 is more secure than Pattern2 because you can save remote area using
replication function of GFS. If you restore at replication destination, it is limited to
the case that replication source cannot recover. (Copyright OS License)
If you do not contract GFS service, you need to contract.
You have to pay attention to network bandwidth.
【Recovery area】
You can retain backup data using GFS if malfunction of data center or natural
disaster occur.
Enterprise Cloud User’s guide for Backup License/Acronis ver1.3 ).35
14
2.3 Pattern of Acronis backup configuration
You can select pattern of Acronis backup configuration according to usage as below.
Pattern Usage
Local style You want to set up backup configuration easily. ( You want to backup
quickly )
You keep operating a few servers only.
You have to configure backup environment in each server for backup.
Centralized
management
style
You want to manage some servers for backup all together.
You want to make backup plan of servers at the same time.
You want to use various functions of Acronis.
Currently, you have a few servers but you have a plan which increases
servers in the future.
Enterprise Cloud User’s guide for Backup License/Acronis ver1.3 ).35
15
2.3.1 Local style You can backup after you only install component of Agent to server for backup. This
is smallest configuration.
About backup destination refer to '2.2 Pattern of backup destination'
【Point】
We recommend if you have a few servers or you have to configure backup
environment in each server for backup.
You can set up backup configuration easily because you can backup after you only
install component of Agent to server for backup.
If you have many servers, your work load may increase. Because of you have to
work in each server for backup.
Enterprise Cloud User’s guide for Backup License/Acronis ver1.3 ).35
16
2.3.2 Centralized management style
You need to install component of Agent to each server for backup. Besides, you have
to install component of Management server and Storage node to manage servers for
backup all together.
About backup destination refer to '2.2 Pattern of backup destination'
【Point】
We recommend if you have some servers and you can set up at the same condition.
Your work load is decreased because you can manage some servers for backup all
together using management server.
In Linux server,You have to be able to ssh as root user.
You can create centralized management vaults and use various option functions
using storage node. (e.g. duplication)
*You can install both component of Management server and Storage node to same
server.
*Management server and Storage node are not required the license keys. Only
agents(backup for server) are required the license keys.

influence. Then, the servers execute the backup in accordance with a backup plan
which received before.
# It is possible to edit the backup plan directly at each server for backup.
It is possible to reuse the backup plan at the other server by export function of
software.
If the issue occurs at the management server, you can use same backup plan by
exported backup plan.
# Refer to Users guide of Acronis (14.1.3 Export and import of backup plans), if you
would like to know more details.
We recommend that you had better introduce the monitoring tools for the
management server. If you have the monitoring tools, you can notice the problem of
management server as soon as possible.
You can use Ping monitoring from ECL customer portal.

② Case of the storage node does not work normally
If the storage node does not work normally, the servers which designate the storage
node as a backup destination fail the backup.
# The servers for backup will notify of the result when the servers fail the backup.
When you designate local disk of storage node as a backup destination, you need to
consider that if the server of storage node is broken, your backup data is lost.
You can use the replication function when you create the backup plan.
If you care about above situation, you need to use this function.
# Refer to Users guide of Acronis (4.5 Replication and retention of backups), if you
would like to know more details.
We recommend that you had better introduce the monitoring tools for the storage
node.

③ Case of the server for backup does not work normally
The servers for backup notify of backup result after finishing the backup using
Acronis notification function.
However, if the server for backup does not work normally such as operating system
issue, the server for backup does not execute the backup plan and Acronis
notification function also does not work.
When the server for backup does not work normally and you need to recover it, you
can execute the restoration.
If you would like to know how to restore, refer to sixth chapter on this document.
We recommend that you had better introduce the monitoring tools for the server for
backup in addition to Acronis notification function.

9.5.2 In the case of Local style
We recommend Local style which you can manage each server for backup if you
have a few servers for backup.
When you configure 'E-mail Notifications' or 'SNMP Notifications' at the backup plan
of each server, you can receive the information of backup result.
# We assume that backup destination server is the disk of other VM.
The servers for notification need to be able to connect to the SMTP (mail) or SNMP
server which is configured as a notification server.
SMTP (mail) or SNMP server has to be prepared by customer.
