ENMITY : The Law of Sin and Death, and Colossians 2 Revisited
(A Sequel to ‘Can Current Adventist Understanding of t he Law
Survive the Swelling Storm of Scrutiny?’)
ichard A! "o#ovoy$ %%
Introduction
%n the &revious &a&er we investigated if there are things in the Law of 'od that we have
een missing as Adventists and it was found that 'od has much light to send us from the Law
and the gos&el! %n fact$ we saw that the gos&el is actually &art of the Law when we see that the
great Law includes oth moral and ceremonial &ortions and that the ceremonial &ortions were
&ro&hecies carried out that &oint to Christ and is sacrifice! ere is a statement that verifies
this*
+he ty&es and shadows of the sacrificial service$ with the prophecies$ gave the %sraelites a veiled$
indistinct view of the mercy and grace to e rought to the world y the revelation of Christ , %t
was seeing the o-ect of that which was to e done away$ seeing Christ as revealed in the law$
that illumined the face of .oses! +he ministration of the law$ written and engraved in stone$
was a ministration of death! /ithout Christ$ the transgressor was left under its curse$ with no
ho&e of &ardon! +he ministration had of itself no glory$ but the promised Saviour, revealed in
the types and shadows of the ceremonial law, made the moral law glorious!
Christ can only e 0revealed in the Law1 when we see that the moral and ceremonial laws are
connected to each other and are &art of the same Law called the +orah in erew! +he moral
law is the +en Commandments$ each of which are further ro#en down y statutes written in the
"oo# of the Law2 and it was shown in the &revious &a&er that the 3ourth Commandment is
0e4ceeding road1 (5s! 667*78) and entails much more than we ever imagined!
+he 3ourth Commandment$ as written in the 3irst +ale of Stone$ only s&ecifies one &eriod
of time* the Saath day (the seventh day concluding a wee#)! 9othing written on the Stone
&oints to a Saviour from sin! "ut when we loo# into the "oo# of the Covenant we find other
&eriods of time* the +amiyd (morning and evening o&ening new days$ &er&etually):which is the
foundation for all the times:the Chodesh (the 9ew .oon o&ening a month)$ and the year
containing annual festivals (Chaggim) and Saaths! Connected with each of these times werethe ty&es and shadows &ointing to Christ$ which are collectively called the ceremonial law! +hus$
through the &ortal of the 3ourth Commandment$ the ceremonial law is connected to the moral
law$ and together they form the one +orah Law! %t is a Law of &erfect love$ with Christ at the very
center of it$ when we loo# to the end of the ceremonies that were to e done away when ty&e met

antity&e at the cross! +he &ro&hetic ceremonies ended$ ut their law of sacrifice fulfilled in
Christ can never e done away$ for e will always e the Lam of 'od!
+he &ur&ose of this &a&er is to further investigate the Law of 'od$ s&ecifically its dual
nature of righteousness and life$ versus sin and death:the latter in &articular$ in its relation to
the 9ew +estament te4ts that antinomians use to try to &rove that 'od’s Law was done away
with! "efore we only had an o&&ortunity to ta#e a &artial loo# at one of these$ Colossians ;$ uthere we will e4&lore it more fully after e4amining other related te4ts to unveil the mystery of
enmity! So let us egin y turning to ; Corinthians$ Cha&ter

reward of oedience! "ut it brings bondage and death to those who remain under its
condemnation !!!
+he glory that shone on the face of .oses was a reflection of the righteousness of Christ in the
law! +he law itself would have no glory$ only that in it Christ is emodied! %t has no &ower to
save! %t is lusterless only as in it Christ is re&resented as full of righteousness and truth!<
%t is seen in this quote$ as it is seen in thoroughly studying 5aul’s statement$ that thenegative attriutes of the Law only a&&ly to the transgressor (sinner) of the Law! +he
righteousness of the Law:as defined y its &rece&ts and as fulfilled in Christ:is not the thing to
e ‘done away’! 5aul uses 0great &lainness of s&eech1 saying that the 0veil is done away in
Christ!1 +he veil of blindness is to e ta#en away$ not the Law itself! 0"ut even unto this day$
when .oses is read$ the veil is u&on their heart !1 A heart condition called unelief is the
&rolem2 there is no fault in 'od’s Law in meeting the condition of humanity! 'od veiled the
&lan of redem&tion in &hysical symols that we can relate with:ut this was only in res&onse to
meeting fallen humanity where they are at!
ad the law of 'od never een transgressed$ there would have een no death$ and no need of a
Saviour2 consequently there would have een no need of sacrifices,
%f man had #e&t the law of 'od$ as given to Adam after his fall$ &reserved y 9oah$ andoserved y Araham$ there would have een no necessity for the ordinance of circumcision ,
they would have #e&t 'od@s law in mind$ and there would have een no necessity for it to e
&roclaimed from Sinai or engraved u&on the tales of stone!
3rom the very eginning:with Adam:sacrifices were only required ecause of sin! So why is it
that we still sin? %s it ecause we are not trying hard enough to sto&? 9o$ no! %t is ecause we
have a veil over our hearts! /e are linded and do not see a clear view of our Saviour! +his is
why 'od gave the ceremonial law! "ecause of our veil of unelief in a sinB&ardoning$ sinB
cleansing Saviour$ 'od gave us a veiled$ yet glorious$ system contained under the 3ourth
Commandment called the ceremonial law! %t is only glorious ecause it &oints to our much more
glorious edeemer who gives us rest from our sins$ and when we get a clear view of im$ the veil
is removed and we see the glory that .oses saw$ as was reflected in his face at Sinai! +hechildren of %srael could not ehold this glory ecause of the veil over their hearts! +hey were
living under the &rinci&le of 0all that ehovah hath s&o#en we will do1 (4! 67*D)$ as if they were
their own saviour!
After many centuries$ this same &rinci&le was &racticed y the 5harisees in the time of
Christ! +heir &hysical eyes eheld is holy life$ ut their s&iritual eyes could not see eyond the
symols of their law2 they could not see Christ in the Law and instead saw im as a law rea#er!
+o them$ the moral code of the Law consisted of letters to try to live u& to$ and they added their
own &rece&ts to it$ seeing that they needed something more to #ee& it! +hey could not see that
the lams &ointed to the Lam$ and that is sinB&ardoning lood and setBa&art S&irit alone
could ring lierty to free their ca&tivity to sin (re&resented y their ca&tivity to gy&t$ "aylon$
and ome)!
.any in the Christian world also have a veil efore their eyes and heart!E

As a result$
+he edeemer$ with a heart of unalterale love$ still sheds his sacred lood in the sinner@s
ehalf!8
+hough ty&e has met antity&e$ 0now once in the end of the world hath e a&&eared to &ut away
sin by the sacrifice of Himself !1 As long as there is sin$ there is an active Saviour! "ut 0this is the
Covenant that % will ma#e with them after those days$ saith ehovah$ I will put My Law into
their hearts$ and in their minds will % write it2 and their sins and iniquities will % rememer no
more! 9ow where remission of these is$ there is no more offering for sin1 (e! 7*;82 6F*68B6D)!
"ecause the veil of unelief is over our hearts$ ecause we have not a clear view of our
Saviour$ 0ecause of the continual commission of sin$ the atoning sacrifice of a heavenly
.ediator is essential!1G /e$ li#e our ancient ancestors$ have yet to fully enter into the 9ew
Covenant$ where we are 0the e&istle of Christ ministered y us$ written not with in#$ ut with the
S&irit of the Living 'od2 not in +ales of Stone$ ut in fleshly tales of the heart !!! ministers of
the 9ew Covenant2 not of the letter$ ut of the S&irit* for the letter #illeth$ ut the S&irit giveth
life!1
Until the veil is removed from our hearts so that the S&irit can fully write the Law there$ we will
still e sinning and Christ will still e offering imself in heaven for our sins! /hen Christ died
on the cross$ the inner veil of the earthly sanctuary was rent in twain$ ut a veil still remains
u&on our hearts! +he 9ew Covenant way was o&ened for us at Calvary$ ut we have yet to fully
enter into it2 thus$ Christ must still carry out what the ceremonial law ty&ified! As we come to
com&rehend this$ it will ecome reality to us and we will ecome living e&istles to &roclaim this
Loud Cry of Christ still offering is lood for our sins until we are entirely cleansed! is
ministry is soon to close for those who refuse such great a salvation$ and they will only receive
the &lagues! +his is the final message$ the most startling one ever given to man! %t will e
&roclaimed that the Law of 'od declares death u&on those who transgress it$ ut it declares life
u&on those who choose Christ to fulfill its righteousness in them!
0+he letter #illeth1 when a veil is over our s&iritual eyes$ &reventing Christ our
ighteousness from eing seen$ and over our heart$ &reventing the S&irit from writing the
righteousness in us! /e see letters and symols$ ut since we do not see Christ in the Law$ we
either try to achieve the requirements on our own or we instead declare that it is all done away!
0+he S&irit giveth life1 when the veil is removed! Life comes only in &ure oedience to Christ in
the Law! /ithout this$ the Law will ring us under condemnation$ for we are without Christ to
fulfill it in us! >nly y is merits are we declared and made righteous$ ut the Law will testify to
this when our case is closed!
Sin shall not have dominion over you* for ye are not under the Law$ ut under grace!D

II The Law of Sin and Death
5aul has much to say aout the Law$ and in the oo# of omans es&ecially he s&ea#s of it in
negatively! Antinomians inter&ret 0under the Law1 as eing those who elieve that the Law is
still inding! owever$ 5aul goes on to e4&lain what he means y using the illustration of servanthood*
Hnow ye not$ that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to oey$ his servants ye are to whom ye
oey2 whether of sin unto death$ or of oedience unto righteousness , "eing then made free
from sin$ ye ecame the servants of righteousness!7
%n order to maintain unilical &reconceived ideas$ one must ta#e a te4t out of conte4t! ere the
conte4t is s&ea#ing of eing under servanthood$ or ondage$ to sin unto death$ ut then eing
made 0free from sin1 with 0the end everlasting life1 (v! ;;)! +hus$ when 5aul uses the term

&ower must come aout from without the Law to create the righteousness$ even Christ who
rings us life!
+here is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ esus$ who wal# not after
the flesh$ ut after the S&irit! 3or the Law of the S&irit of life in Christ esus hath made me free
from the Law of sin and death!6;
+he dilemma has now een e4&lained! +he Law that we are not to e under ut freed from is this
Law of sin and death:that is$ freed from sinning against Law of 'od and incurring the wages of
sin:death:which the Law declares! 0"eing then made free from sin$ ye ecame the servants of
righteousness!1 0esus hath made me free from the Law of sin and death!1 +he only way to reach
an inter&retation that we are to e free from 0the Law of 'od1 or 0the righteousness of the Law1

views that &eo&le have of the Law! is concern was that many were viewing it as a Law that is
achieved merely y one’s own efforts$ ut he showed that man has a fallen flesh and that
naturally the lower &assions rule and are at enmity with 'od and is Law! So he wanted to &aint
an entirely different &icture of the Law than what &eo&le had in their minds for so long!
Unfortunately$ many &eo&le today still have a wrong &icture of it! +hey thin# that Christ freed us
from eing in ondage to its im&ossile standards! +hey then wrest with 5aul’s writings to
maintain their view! "ut it is -ust the o&&osite! Christ came to free us from having to #ee& it on
our own and continually failing! e came to 0estalish the Law1$ 0that the righteousness of the
Law might e fulfilled in us1!
5aul wants us to see a new &icture of the Law:one with Christ in it$ fulfilling in us the
righteousness thereof as we trust in is &ower to do so and claim is merits alone! Christ is 0the
Living Law1:a term that AlonNo +! ones and llet ! /aggoner frequently used! Christ says$
0+hin# not that % am come to destroy the Law$ or the &ro&hets* % am not come to destroy$ ut to
fulfill1 (.att! E*6G)! /hen e fulfills the Law$ e ecomes the Living Law:the very
emodiment of it! +he +amiyd$ the Saath$ the Chodesh$ and the annual festivals are all to e
seasons of celerating and honoring is &lan of freeing us from the Law of sin and death! At the
cross$ the ceremonies associated with them died with im$ to have their true fulfillment in im! All moral &rinci&les are dead letters that cannot save without Christ$ ut in im they ecome
alive and are fulfilled in the righteousness e creates in us as we continually de&end on im!
+hen the Law will no longer function to condemn us ut to commend us$ as we are hid in Christ!
+his is the Law that 5aul wants us to see! %t ma#es us want to urst in -oy with the 5salmist$
saying 0> how love % +hy LawM %t is my meditation all the day1 (5s! 667*7G)! 5aul wants to carry
us away from the e4&erience we may have formerly had with the Law* wor#s that always fall
short$ sins that #ee& coming ac#$ condemnation$ and death! +his new$ yet intended$ way of
viewing 5aul’s writings on the Law will give us much further insight as to what was nailed to the
cross in Colossians ;! /e -ust have one more sto& to ma#e on the way there* the &arallel te4t to

III "ro# En#it$ to Reconciliation
And % will &ut enmity etween thee and the woman$ and etween thy seed and her seed2 it shall
ruise thy head$ and thou shalt ruise his heel!68
+he world is at enmity with 'od (see as! *)! "ut the &romise is to &ut us at enmity with the
ser&ent (the devil) through Christ (the Seed of ve and .ary$ who re&resent the church)$ who
0was ruised for our iniquities1 so that 0we are healed1 (%sa! Enly y &lacing ourselves in
Christ:is &erfect life$ is sufferings and death$ and is life and resurrection:and y Christ

een dwelling in im in heavenly &laces!
/ith this wonderful im&ression of salvation in mind:yea$ with our eyes fi4ed on Calvary:
let us &roceed on to the te4t in &hesians that is of most interest to us*
At that time ye were without Christ$ eing aliens from the commonwealth of %srael$ andstrangers from the Covenants of the &romise$ having no ho&e$ and without 'od in the world*
"ut now in Christ #esus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh y the lood of Christ!
3or e is our &eace$ who hath made oth one$ and hath ro#en down the middle wall of
&artition etween us2 aving aolished in is flesh the enmity, even the law of
commandments contained in ordinances2 for to ma#e in himself of twain one new man$ so
ma#ing &eace2 And that e might reconcile oth unto 'od in one body y the cross$ having
slain the enmity therey,
9ow therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners$ ut fellowcitiNens with the holy ones$
and of the household of 'od2 And are uilt u&on the foundation of the a&ostles and &ro&hets$
esus Christ himself eing the chief corner stone2 %n whom all the uilding fitly framed together
groweth unto an holy tem&le in the Lord* %n whom ye also are uilded together for an
haitation of 'od through the S&irit!;6
%t is im&ortant to understand that the Christian church is not different from the erew church!
/e are to form one s&iritual tem&le for Christ to dwell in us! /ithout an understanding of this
‘foundation’$ we will have a false conce&t of the gos&el$ and we will inter&ret 0the Law of
commandments contained in ordinances1 to e at enmity with us in its fulfillment! "ut Christ
has one &eo&le and one Law that governs is ody!
9ot understanding 5aul’s language regarding the Law would hinder us as well2 that is why
we have studied it first! ememer$ there are two functions of the Law that are at enmity with
each other! >n one side we have a Law that &oints out sin and condemns the sinner to death
ecause Christ was not sought to fulfill the Law! >n the other side we have a Law that reveals
righteousness and &oints to a Saviour that creates the righteousness in us after ta#ing our sinsand re&lacing them with is im&uted righteousness! +he former is at enmity with the latter$
thus the former fits the conte4t in which 5aul uses the &hrase 0the Law of commandments
contained in ordinances1$ which he calls 0the enmity1! %t must e the Law of sin and death$
which is certainly against us! +he righteousness of moral law cannot e the enmity$ for it
ensures eternal life2 without it$ heaven would not e heaven! And ceremonial law eing fulfilled
in our Saviour is certainly not at enmity with us either$ for e is the only way that we can live
righteouslyM
+he ceremonial law that &er&etuated sin and death through the &er&etual slaying of easts
after having sins confessed over them had to end at the cross! ence$ Sister /hite wrote that
0the Law of commandments contained in ordinances1 is 0this ceremonial law!1 ;; +his is the
e4tent to which we covered the &arallel te4ts in Colossians ; and &hesians ; in the first &a&er!owever$ this is only a &artial understanding! 9o &ro&het quoting Scri&ture conveys all the light
that can e drawn from it! /ith our fuller ac#ground in how 5aul deals with 0the Law1$ we
