Lesson for today:“TAG

QUESTION” We use tag

questions at the end of statements to ask

for confirmation. They mean

something like: "Am I right?" or "Do you

agree?"

BASIC STRUCTURE

STATEMENT TAG QUESTION

POSITIVE STATEMENT, NEGATIVE TAG?

Example: You are a student, aren’t you? (あなたは学生ですよね?)

STATEMENT TAG QUESTION

NEGATIVE STATEMENT, POSITIVE TAG?

Example: She doesn’t like tomatoes, does she? (彼女はトマトが好きではないですよね?)

POSITIVE STATEMENT, NEGATIVE TAG QUESTION

Subject + Auxiliary + Verb/Pronoun/Adjective/Adverb + Auxiliary + Not + Subject

(あなたは作家ですよね?) 1. You are a writer, aren’t you?

(彼はここで働いていますよね?) 2. He works here, doesn’t he?

(今日、暑くないですか?)3. It is very hot today, isn’t it?

NEGATIVE STATEMENT, POSITIVE TAG QUESTION

Subject + Auxiliary + Not + Verb/Pronoun/Adjective/Adverb + Auxiliary + Subject

(彼女はあなたの先生ではないですよね?)1. She is not your teacher, is she?

(フランス語は話しませんよね?)2. You do not speak French, do you?

(彼女は料理しませんよね?)3. She does not cook very well, does she?

REMEMBER: PUT A COMMA (,) AFTER THE POSITIVE/NEGATIVE STATEMENT OR BEFORE

THE POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE TAG QUESTION.
