• 1701 discovered in Virginia• 1750 April 13th - Dr. Thomas Walker was the

first recorded person to discover and use coal. • It was used to power trains and now it is used

for U.S. Air Force flies B-52 bomber and C-17 transport aircraft on jet fuel that is gasified coal.

Electricity

• Benjamin Franklin discovered lighting was electricity in 1752.

• Electricity was used for lightening rods and now it is used for lighting our homes and anything that plugs in.

Ethanol

• It has been around in the form of Moonshine Whiskey since 15th century Scotland.

• It was used in alcoholic beverages and now it is used in gasoline.

Geothermal

• Geothermal energy was first discovered at Larderello, Italy, in 1903.

• It used to be used for cooking and heating and now it is used for heating and generating electricity.

Hydropower

• It was discovered in the 1870s by Lester Pelton.

• It was used as a turbine to power a sewing machine but now it is used for generating electricity.

Municipal Solid Waste

• Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills were first issued in 1959 by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

• MSW was originally was just a landfill that people put their waste but now is used to generate electricity.

• It was discovered by a goat herder in 1000BC. • It at first was used to light streets and is now

used for cooking and heating.

Nuclear

• It was discovered in 1905 by Albert Einstein.• It was used for electricity first and now it is

used for weapons of mass destruction.
