Objectives
• By the end of this presentation, you should be able to:
Create an Endnote account and add references
Manage and organise your references
Export references to a word document
Create a Bibliography
What is Endnote?
• “EndNote is a bibliographic management software program designed to help
individuals store, organize, cite and format bibliographic references”
No more writing out and organizing citations by hand
Store all your references, PDF articles, tables, images, & charts in one place
No more consulting a style manual every 5 minutes when you’re writing a research paper or
manuscript.
The program is available free on the website to all UNIVEN staff and
students.
What Endnote can do for users?
Organise your references
Import references from other various databases
Create Bibliography choosing your reference method e.g. Harvard, MLA,
APA, Vancouver etc.
Reference your materials in the body of your research (Cite as You Write)
Endnote Basics
Register on www.endnote.com (create your profile)
Open the Endnote program and click “New” under the File Menu
Search for your articles from various databases e.g. Sabinet, Google Scholar
etc. and export your references to your account
Export your references from Endnote to your research paper (creating your
bibliography)
EndNote Web Account
• Sign up if no account was
created previously.
• Same account as the one used
for Web of Science. (Can’t
create two accounts under the
same email address.)
• Just sign in if already available.
Example of Exporting your references from
Sabinet
Create a Formatted BibliographyAfter highlighting the citations and
choosing the output style, go to the
File menu and click “Export…” and
save the file as rtf (Rich Text Format).
Summary
Two databases e.g. Endnote (log in) and Sabinet
Do your search on Sabinet e.g. The history of death penalty in South Africa and Zimbabwe(choose and put your keywords on Sabinet)
The relevant articles, export them to your endnote account (as shown in the previous slide)
Then go read and type your research and do your footnoting. When done, go to endnote, retrieve or copy your bibliography and attach it on your research and submit
No worries about commas, full stops, spacing, pagination etc. Endnote will do it for you
Remember
Endnote just stores and outputs the data you have selected
It won’t correct you if you have chosen the wrong or irrelevant references
It won’t read the articles for you. You have to do it yourself
Advices
As Research Lawyers, you need to give yourself time to search for relevant
articles and cases
- Time
- Patience
- Do your Own Research (practice)
- Technology (WI FI)
