Emphasis and Focal Point

• Emphasis is the stressing of a particular area of focus (focal point) in a composition. We use emphasis to create a focal point (the area where you eye sees first).

• When a composition has no emphasis nothing stands out.

Composition: Rule of Thirds

• Simple way of making your composition interesting.

• Do not be tempted to always place your subject/focal point in the center.

• Place it off center to make it more interesting.

• The principle of emphasis is very important if you want a subject to stand out.

• These principles applies across many disciplines like design and photography, not just drawing.

• Use the Rule of Thirds for better composition

Activity (Principles of Art:Emphasis)

Create a drawing or a design. (coloured) - Must be coloured - Remember to use the RULE OF THIRDS- Emphasize one part of the compostion using either- Colour- Shape- Value- Size- Orientation- Isolation.
