TRANSCRIPT

Hello Everyone,

How you guys doing?

Alright, I m Azhar Hussain and I am Med 1, I was the licensed Phlebotomist before I got here

and I will be going over with the IV protocol then you guys will be able to practice it on these

dummies.

First of all, anyone here familiar with the IV protocol?

If yes, are you a phlebotomist ?

If NO o e is fa iliar, That’s okay, e ill go o er right o

IV catheter/ Cannula sizes

IV cannula comes in various sizes, from 14 G to 24 G,even numbers.

Notice the yellow is 24 G a d it’s the s allest o e, used for babies. A d the RED (da gerous color) is 14 G used for adult to pass large amounts of fluid in less time, usually during surgeries.

Larger the number, Smaller the needle. DON’T ASK ME WHY …..

Some ppl also refer them by colors rather than sizes.

Method 1. Tourniquet

2. Apply an antiseptic solution. Allow to air-dry for up to 1 minute to ensure disinfection of the site and to prevent stinging as the needle pierces the skin. Once the skin is cleaned, do not touch or repalpate it.

3. Take the cannula at 30 degrees angle and try to puncture/pierced the vein

This is known as Primary Flashback, this just means that we punctured the vein. The angle

should be 30 degree in order to puncture it. IT does not show that you can give fluids now.

Pull the needle back slightly to fill the other chamber

This is known as secondary flashback.

Lower the angle of the cannula to pass smoothly into the vein.

Holding the needle in place, advancing the cannula inside and RELEASE THE TOURNIQUET.

APPLE THE PRESSURE AT THE TIP OF CANNULA AND REMOVE THE NEEDLE, PRESSURE IS

IMPORTANT TO PREVENT BACK FLOW.
