SACE Emax: the reference standardin air circuit-breakers
SACE Emax low-voltage air circuit-breakers
have been designed and manufactured by
ABB SACE L.V. with the aim of satisfying the
most advanced mark et requirements.
Building on the highly-acclaimed results
obtained by the SACE Isomax S series of
moulded-case circuit-breakers, this new series
extends the characteristics of safety, reliability,
integration and coordination that distinguish
the entire ABB SACE L.V. low-voltage productfamily to high rated current values.
T he SACE Emax series won the favour of users
on all markets as soon as it was launched,
proving itself to be the perfect solution to the
requirements of even the most technologically
sophisticated installations.
T hanks to its new versions and performance
features, combined with a further-increased
range of accessories, SACE Emax makes it
possible to anticipate the design trends of the
future.

The SACE Emax series benefits from
ABB SACE L.V. ’s experience in the manufacture
of ai r circuit- breakers, which began in the late
Fifties wi th the SACE O tomax series - the first
air circuit-breaker designed and manufactured
entirely in I taly. The series comprised a
swi tchgear range wi th rated currents of 1250 to
5000 amps and a maxi mum breaking capacity
of 100 kA .
The success of this fi rst series was echoed by
that of the G 30 series in the Seventies, which
was the first to offer electronic releases
alongside traditional electromagnetic releases.
T his takes us to 1979, when AB B SACE L.V .
started manufacturing the SACE Novomax
series - the first high-performance current-
limi ting air circuit-breakers on the market.
1989 marked the arrival of the SACE
M egamax, a signifi cant step forwards that
introduced PR1 mi croprocessor-based releases
installed on-board the circuit-breakers. T hanks
to this innovation, air circuit-breakers were
transformed from a simple component to anintegral and sophisticated part of a complex
“system” .
T he strengths of the current SACE Emax series
build on over half a century’s development
and are the logical consequence of a design
and manufacturing philosophy firmly focused
on innovation, safety and reliability.

A complete range to satisfy any installation
The SACE Emax series is offered in a complete
range of rated currents and available as five
different models in fixed, withdrawable, three
and four-pole versions. Characterised by
uninterrupted rated currents of from 800 to
6300 amps and breaking capacities of up to
150 kA, the series is able to satisfy the most
demanding requirements of modern industrial
and naval installations. Each model is available
in a variety of di fferent circuit-breaker options
that have the same dimensions but different
rated currents and breaking capacities. Look ed
at from a manufacturing and use standpoint,
SACE Emax circuit-breakers can be divided into
two main categories of use: selective circuit-
breakers and current-limi ting circuit-breakers.
The former make it possible to implement
different types of selectivi ty thanks to high
short-time withstand current values and the
SAC E PR111 and PR112 overcurrent releases.
The different types of selectivi ty available are:
current, energy, time and zone.

T he current-limi ting circuit-breakers mak e it
possible to achieve a considerable reduction
in the peak current compared to the
prospective current and, therefore, to limit the
specifi c let-through energy. T he resultant
benefits include a reduction in electrodynamic
and thermal stresses, consequently mak ing i t
possible to
reduce the

An intelligent and flexible answerto all your protection requirements
SACE PR111 and SACE PR112microprocessor-basedovercurrent releasesAlongside its modern series of ai r circuit-
breakers, A BB SACE L.V. presents a complete
and innovative range of microprocessor-based
electronic overcurrent releases, the SAC E
PR111 and PR112. Anyone installing SACE
Emax circuit-breakers has the option of
choosing the release that is best suited to thei rinstallation needs in any given situation,
together with the designer’s requirements
regarding safety and reliabil ity. T he advances
made by electrical installations implementing
distributed intelligence systems has made the
role played by releases increasingly important,
demanding that they offer:
• high operating precision;
• a wide range of settings;
• complete protection against all types of faults;
• measurement and monitoring of the main
electrical parameters;
• dialogue with supervision and control
systems such as SACE SD -View 810.
T hese functions are provided on SAC E Emax
circuit-breakers using the SACE PR111 and
PR112 microprocessor-based releases, whi ch
provide protection functions against overloads

• using protection function “G ” of the release:
in this case the earth current is calculated by
the release itself using the vector sum of the
phase and neutral currents ( “residual”
method)
• using a special toroid coi l that is installed onthe connection between the star centre and
earth of the MV/LV transformer, wi th direct
reading of the earth leakage current ( “Source
ground return”)
• using electronic residual-current relays from
a SACE RCQ switchboard with separate
toroid coil.
T his range of di fferent options makes it
possible to cover every earth fault protection
and selectivity requirement.

T he growing complexi ty of installations
together with the need for increasingly
efficient and safe swi tchgear has led A BB
SACE L.V . to develop uni ts that complete the
functions offered by a mi croprocessor-based
release, the “brains” of a circuit-breaker.
T he SACE P R010/T and SACE PR010/K units
are the result this product development
approach.
SACE PR010/T:fingertip controlT his unit is able to provi de test, programming
and parameter readout functions for SACE
Emax series protection releases.
T hanks to its compact dimensions, simplicity
of operation and handling, this unit is
particularly easy to use in all conditions, even
when the circuit-breaker i s installed. T he Test
function, which can be implemented using
both releases, mak es it possible to check all
the protection functions in two different ways,
either manually or automatically,
simultaneously monitoring whether the
mi croprocessor is operating correctly. I t is also
possible to store any test results of interest in
the unit itself and export them to a personal
computer using the “report download”
function. Parameters can only be set and read
out on the PR112 range of releases.
ABB SACE L.V. also supplies a floppy disk
with the unit containing the application
software for updating or adapting the Test
unit in line with the development of new
products.
SACE PR010/K T his is a signalling unit able to convert the
digital signals from the SACE PR112 release to
electric signals, thus making it possible to
monitor the status of the protection device,
including remotely. T he information provided
mainly concerns the alarm conditions of all
the protection functions and the release’s
alarm situations. T his unit also allows one to
implement a load control function that acts
directly on the operating means of other
circuit-breakers installed downstream.
T he “intelligence” of the unit resides in the
fact that i t is able to recognise the type of
release concerned, enabling it to configure
itself to suit the characteristics of the latter.

From releases to an integrated system
M icroprocessor-based releases offering
measurement and dialogue functions are the
final link in distributed control systems for low
and medium voltage electrical installations,
based on the use of intelligent units connected
to one another using a local network .
The new SACE PR112 releases also mak e it
possible to achieve integration in the “logic” of
the centralised management system of the
installations using circuit-breakers that are
suitable both for the protection and
automation of electrical i nstallations.
I t is possible to control and monitor the
following using the dialogue unit:
• circuit-breaker status
• protection function parameters
• number of operations ( opening/closing)
• value of the current interrupted
• operating status of the release
• prealarm/alarm indications
• operating mechanism (opening/closing).
The mi croprocessor-based protection releases
in the SACE PR112/PD series inserted in theSAC E SD -View 810 control system represent
ABB SACE L.V .’s basic answer for the control
and automation of electrical installations in
industry and the servi ce sector.
It is also possible to interface the SACE PR112/PD

communication protocols
present on the mark et.

SACE Emax presents all the benefits of the linePoint by point
Easyinstallation
The number of mountingpoints required has beenreduced compared to theprevi ous series and theyhave all been placed on thebase of the circuit-breakerto make it easier to installthe circuit-breakers inswitchboards. The availabili ty of a widerange of terminals makes itpossible to build wall-mounted switchboards orswitchboards that can beaccessed from the rear withrear connections. The circuit-breakers areavailable with di fferentcombinations of top andbottom terminals to meetspecial requirements.
Easycustomisation
Accessory installationoperations have beenoptimised and simplifiedthanks to a range of specialconstruction features. Allthe electrical accessories arefitted from the front. Thismakes it simpler to fit theaccessories and means thattheir installation can beplanned in the lastinstallation phase. What’smore, the simplicity andsafety of the operationsmeans that the endcustomer can also carry outany customisation thatmight become necessaryduring the life of theinstallation. To this end, thecurrent transformers for thedifferent rated currents arealso extremely easy tochange.
Optimal answers to
problems of design,
operation and
management.
The protection releases
feature sophisticated
protection functions and
wide adjustment ranges.

dimensions.
The same height and
depth for the entire
series.
The same accessories
for the entire range both
for DC and AC.
Operator safety is
ensured by a multitude
of diff erent features,
including:• double insulation
between accessories
and power circuit;
• key locks and padlock
devices on operating
mechanisms;

Optimalwarehousemanagement
Stock management in thewarehouses of electricalmaterial distributors andcustomers who need tomanage the maintenanceand spare parts of largeinstallations is made muchsimpler and rationalised bythe adoption of highly-effective solutions, including:• a single line of
accessories for the entireseries
• an opening and closingrelease that can be usedas a single accessory. The function isdetermined exclusivelyby the mounting position
• duty releases that can bepowered in DC or ACwithout any modification
• single fixed part for eachcircuit-breaker model(even if they havedifferent rated currentsand different breakingcapacities)
• interchangeability of SACE PR111 and PR112overcurrent releases
• conversion kit fordifferent terminal andversion solutions.
Efficient andsafe installations
SACE Emax circuit-breakersprovide a high level of safety for those operatingon the installation:• a series of locks ( key
locks or padlockdevices) ensurecomplete safety againstany incorrect operations
• the accessories areinstalled from the frontand operator safety isensured by the doubleinsulation thatguarantees totalsegregation of theaccessory seatings fromthe power circuit
• circuit-breakers can alsobe racked out with thecompartment doorclosed
• option of mechanicalinterlock ing across twoor three circuit-breakers,irrespective of theirmodel or version ( fixedor wi thdrawable) usingflexible cables. Thecircuit-breakers can beinstalled vertically orhorizontally.
• different protectiongrades available,including IP54,
implemented using atransparent tamper-proof guard for fitting on thefront of the switchboard
Easy and safemaintenance
Just a few simpleoperations allow fullinspection of the arcingchamber and powercontacts wi th the circuit-breaker out of service;( withdrawable versions caneven be racked out withthe door closed) .Isolation of the accessorycompartment from thepower circuit prevents anypossibility of accidentalcontact with live parts.
The intelligence of thenew-design SACE PR111and PR112 microprocessor-based overcurrent releasesenables: very highoperating precision, a wideadjustment range, protection against all typesof faults and monitoring of the main electricalparameters, operationwithout the need for anauxiliary power supply, sensiti vity to the true root-mean-square value of thecurrent, and the option of dialogue with computerisedsupervision and controlsystems such as the SACESD-View 810.
