Pastor’s Message
Trusting in God’s grace, An accepting, joyful community, Serving God and neighbor.
August 2016
God’s Work, Our Hands
1
Expectation
At this time in the season there is a certain level of anticipation developing regarding your garden or fields. This year, I am only focused on managing the weeds and looking forward to next year. I live in hope of possibility of having a beautiful garden some day, but it is not yet for this year.
Gardner's Creed
I believe in the creative energy of sun and soil,
Rain, and spring days giving way to heat.
I believe in seeds, those
miraculous containers of rebirth, a whole
garden sprouting into being from a few
paper packets neatly stamped with planting
dates.

As a faith community we are living in a time of expectancy. The Call Committee and Council have been diligent in their work in discerning which candidate has the gifts to serve as ERLC’s permanent pastor. Hopefully your excitement is beginning to grow with the joy and anticipation of the upcoming vote on August 7 after the 10:30 service. You are ready for this next step in your history. God has answered your prayers now and in time all will be revealed. As your interim pastor I am praying for each one of you in this season of waiting and expectation.

Mission Works • July 27 The mission day on July 27 was a great success! 18 children plus Dennis Hove, Greg and Deb Pouliot and myself visited Guardian Angels and participated in their daily BINGO activity. We had a great time playing BINGO! At CAER we packed KID BAGS, for children who usually get free school breakfast and lunch. In all we packed 140 bags plus dog food, and also did some odd jobs. Afterwards we were told that only 3 other groups have ever finished all 140 bags, enough for the entire week. Our children’s work ethic, teamwork and organizational skills were remarkable and impressive! They were AMAZING!! It was a great outing.
We have one Mission Works event left on August 8 when we visit and work with Feed My Starving Children. There is still time to sign up: at this writing there are 16 spots open.

I have been blessed this summer to spend a lot of time with many of our youth at camp. My final camp was with the high school youth out at Sky Ranch in Colorado. We explored and discussed how God calls us in many different ways. But most importantly we shared in the good news of Jesus Christ. As a Christian, we are called to serve God's people. The Bible verse that I kept reminding myself as Ryan and I were taking 8 youth to Colorado was:
"Be strong and courageous, for the Lord will be with you wherever you go." —Joshua 1:9
Our final Mission Works event will be on August 8th at Feed My Starving Children. You can still sign up (call or email Laura Babneau.) We have 50 spots to fill and we are currently at 34 spots filled. Also in the newsletter you will find registrations for Sunday School and Confirmation. We are asking that everyone fill out the forms this year so that the accuracy of our CYF records can be verified. I am excited for the beginning of Sunday School and Confirmation, but until then please enjoy the rest of your summer!

Happy Summer, everyone! I hope you all have been enjoying the warm weather with plenty of trips to The Lake (whichever lake that is) and plenty of delicious, grilled food. I gotta be honest, summer is my favorite time for food. The grill makes everything taste so wonderfully.
While you are still enjoying your summer beside the smoky grill or refreshing water, I hope you stick around Elk River for the first Sunday of August. Our 2nd Summer Pop Up Choir will sing for both the 1st AND 2nd services. We had a great turn out for July’s Pop Up Choir, so I would love to see you join in another instant songfest. We will be singing Michael W. Smith’s “How Majestic is Your Name”. For the 8:15 service we’ll gather at 7:30am in the “Choir Loft” to rehearse. If you’re a 10:30 service goer, we’ll come together at 10:00 to rehearse with Ron, Mark, Stephanie, Dan, Tom, and Mike of Praise Team 2. There’s something about singing together that satisfies the soul. At this time in our world, singing as one voice makes us feel closer in body, mind, and spirit. Please join us on the 7th.
Later this month, ERLC will present musical and dramatic selections performed by our
Summer Music Notes
Calling All Lovers of Green! Have you noticed we are acquiring green plants and occasional fresh flowers to warm our sanctuary's welcoming space? These are in addition to the lilies at Easter and the poinsettias at Christmas. Their freshness is wonderful, but they all require tender care and regular water. Worship committee would like to gather a group of folks willing to come in midweek to water, take off dead leaves/blossoms, rotate plants for best light and just tend our indoor garden. If you are interested in helping, please call Sue Sass at 763-441-8895 or Pam Black at 763-441-5255. Our plants need you!

children. Rehearsals are August 15 through 17
with the performance at the Sunday Worship Services on August 21. Laura and I are excited to work with our young children with music and dramatic elements. Both actors and audience get a sneak peak into Jesus’ message for all of us. Fun, upbeat songs will be included. If anyone’s interested in participating, contact either me or Laura. At the end of this month, the choir will be having their first ever Fall retreat on Saturday, August 27th. It’ll be a partial day event with socializing and singing. This will be a perfect time for you to visit this small loving community within our church, and see if it’s a good fit for you. We’ll sing through some songs for the upcoming year, while getting to know each other. I hope you enjoyed our Pop Up Choirs, and we would love to have you sing with us throughout the year. Remember it doesn’t have to be a yearlong commitment. You can come anytime and share your faith through song, even if you’re a “Snowbird” or a busy, busy parent.
See you Sunday, Taylor
