Elements of Design

• The elements of design are line, shape, space, texture, and color. They are sometimes referred to as the building blocks of design.

The Elements of Design1. Line- gives directions to a design and break larger areas into smaller ones. Lines also create movement in a design, carrying your eye from one area to another. They can be vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or curved.

2. Shape- is the outline that forms when one or more lines come together to enclose an area. Sometimes called a silhouette. Four basic clothing shapes are natural, tubular, bell, and full.

3. Space- is the area inside a shape. What goes on within the space contributes to the visual effect of the garment.

4. Texture- describes the surface characteristics that determine the look and feel of an object or garment.

5. Color- a quality such as red, blue, green, yellow, etc., that you see when you look at something. A hue.

Brightness describes intensity in a color.
