Learning Goals

Providing skills and abilities for

accessing resources of the Library of Science, within

the framework of the EHEA (European Higher

Education Area).

2. How to do a bibliographic

search

When We are asked to undertake a bibliographic work, We need:

1. To select the information sources

2. To evaluate the information sources

3. To choose a research topic

4. To identify the keywords

5. To seek related terms

6. To combine the terms

2. How to do a bibliographic

search

¿To choose a research topic?:

discharges of domestic wastewater are a source of major pollution

Limits :

Language of the documents

Different approaches: scientific, sociological, historical

2. How to do a bibliographic

search

To Identify keywords and seek related terms:

pollution, contamination

water, sea, river

sewage

waste water [wastewater] , liquid waste ,

waste water treatment , sewage treatment

2. How to build a bibliographic

search

Seek related terms and combine them:

BOOLEAN SEARCHING : a search method which allows the searcher to narrow or broaden the focus of a search by combining concepts. 3 operators : OR,AND,NOT

TRUNCATION (*): a word root followed by the truncation symbol will retrieve variant endings. Truncation is useful for retrieving both the singular and the plural forms of a word at the same time

Ex. : pollut*

c 2. How to build a bibliographic

search. Boolean searching

3 boolean operators :

OR : each result contains at least one search term

(pollution OR contamination)

AND : each result contains all search terms

(pollution AND water AND sewage)

NOT : retrieves records that contain the terms

pollution and water, but eliminates those which

contain the word “sewage” (Pollution AND water

NOT sewage)

2. How to build a bibliographic

search Accessing the resources:

Books and journal titles :

*UAM Catalogue: http://biblos.uam.es/uhtbin/cgisirsi/?ps=6YFTcWFA2f/FILOS OFIA/307580235/60/72/X

*Union Catalogue (REBIUN, Spanish University Librairies):

*Journals Articles: Databases and Electronic Journals: BUN!

NOTE: To use

Databases and Electronic Journals

Outside the UAM

there exist 2 requirements:

1.- @uam.es; 2.-VPN Software - SIR Resources

BUN!

Advantages in using BUN!

• Searching is fast, easy, and uses a familiar interface—it's almost like Google

• Search results include citations of many kinds of sources: books, journal articles, newspaper

articles, conference proceedings, dissertations, photos, multimedia, and much more

• Search results can be quickly narrowed by using the facets: content type, library location, subject

terms, publication date, language, and more

• Search results can be limited to scholarly or peer-reviewed sources with one click

• Searches can include materials that are not part of the UAM collections, but which can easily be

requested through our interlibrary loan service

• BUN! identifies which resources are available in full text (limiting to full text in most databases

eliminates results that are available as full text from other sources)

• Citations in your search results can be viewed in six commonly used citation formats (APA, AMA,

MLA, Uniform, Chicago, and Harvard), exported to EndNote, emailed, and printed

...But keep in mind

• BUN! includes many, many resources, but not everything the UAM Library subscribe to

• Comprehensive searches on a topic require using subject-specific databases

• Vague or short searches will return too many results; searches using well-refined search terms or

phrases in quotes will return fewer, more refined results

10

A basic search:

Just type your keywords into the Bun! search box, and click search

Then, use the filters on the left side of the results page to choose

the kind of article you need (scholarly/peer-reviewed,magazine,

newspaper, etc.). Don't forget to select "full text online," too

Can I save my search results in Bun!?

In your BUN! results list, click the small folder icon next to the

title you want to save. It will be added to your "saved items" folder

for the current session (be careful not to close your browser before

you have saved, printed or emailed your list!). Then, click the large

folder icon at the top of the page.
