Electronic Medical Record Keeping Canada- A Case Study

Medical Record: A record of a patient's medical information (as medical history, care or treatments received, test results, diagnoses, and medications taken)

Electronic medical record: An electronic medical record (EMR) is a digital version of the traditional paper-based medical record for an individual. The EMR represents a medical record within a single facility, such as a doctor's office or a clinic.

Benefits of using EMR

Digital Storage: Capable of carrying much more information then traditional system

Ease of Access: Allows information to downloaded directly onto a PDA and authorized individual can access online from any location

Reduce costs: The initial cost of electronic medical record is very high but the overall cost in maintaining is less.

Benefits of using EMR

Increased Risk Management: Digital form help the physician to know the patient effectively and doing the medication accordingly.

Accuracy: Electronic medical record come with the features that make sure all the necessary information of patient is included in the form.

Quality: Faster and error free health care decisions on the part of the physician, and faster implementation of those decisions by support staff.

Provinces and territories are building and upgrading their EHR systems so they're consistent from one region to the next, each one is at a different stage of development

Six core types of databases need to be in place for a provincial EHR to be considered complete.

Of the six core types of databases that need to be completed, nine provinces already have at least four in place.
