TEXTBOOKS

Nurse students must have material that they can rely on for reference. Although the Internet can be a good source of general information, it's hard to tell which sites come from reputable sources and which do not. Nursing textbooks teach students about procedures and diseases, knowledge of which is essential to practice.

Students should purchase a medical dictionary, books about anatomy, nursing diagnosis books, and any materials that are specific to their field of interest.

Role-Playing

Nursing is about more than diagnosis and following procedures. It's about treating patients and co-workers with respect. Future nurses should learn how to act in a variety of situations. Role-play is a great way for practice.

For example, you can role-play how to treat a patient who is refusing treatment or what to do when you disagree with a doctor's diagnosis.

Simulations and Clinical Experience

When it comes to actual procedures, such as taking blood pressure, setting up monitors, or giving injections, hands-on practice is essential.

When possible, you can use simulations, such as performing CPR on a dummy. In other situations, nurses must learn to do things in the field. Stand by while a young nurse performs certain procedures on real patients.

Case Studies

Case studies are a great way for nursing students to practice diagnosing patients without worrying about making a major mistake.

Use case studies to challenge students. They'll learn about a patient's symptoms and try to determine what the problem may be. You can also use case studies in a role-playing situation. Give each student in the class a copy of a case study. They must then partner up with another student. One student pretends to be ill, based on the symptoms in the case study, while the other makes the diagnosis. Then, students switch places.
