A hundreds of preserved outstanding historical manors are one of the most attractive sightseeings in Estonia

At the beginning of the 20th century there were 1245 main manors There were also 108 parsonages (church manors) and around 600

manor dairy farms – altogether over 2000 thousand different manors

When the Republic of Estonia was declared in 1918 many manor ensembles were nationalised (nursing and children’s homes, hospitals, breeding stations, offices of the rural municipalities)

Many manor houses were turned into schools There are around 60 manor schools in 2009 Schools located in manors are unique educational

A lot has been invested in the manor complexes that are used as schools, and the investments will increase even more in the years to come. As a result of good preparation and renovation work, by 2011 about 15 more manor complexes will contribute to the tourism based on hereditary culture.

With the visiting game “Forgotten manors” manor schools have proved their capability of providing services as well as their attractivity as tourism objects.

We need to 1. Make the cultural heritage accessible. 2. Increase the livability and the social efficiency of the

rural areas. 3. Create attractive tourism products and services. 4. Help to preserve the cultural objects and to use them

economically
