Hello to all.

The June National board meeting was held via phone conference on June 15, 2020. We discussed the upcoming ETI National events. Plans for the national horse show are moving right along. The horse show team is working hard on putting this event on. This is a very important event for ETI, so I hope our membership will come out and show or at least come out and support the event. The dates and information are in this magazine.

The ETI Spring Ride new dates and application are in this magazine and on the website. This is a good time to get out and spend a week enjoying your horse and giving you a chance to relax after the stress of the last several months.

This year has been very hard on everyone. I hope that things will settle down, and we can get back to somewhat of a normal life.

Stay safe, and look out for each other.

One of our members, Jack McGee, invited Corral 14 to hold a Drive/Ride from his home Rancho Notso Grande in Bakersfield on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31, through the Panorama View Preserve.

Part of our members began arriving Friday, 29, and the rest arrived Saturday morning. The temperature was 85 degrees on Saturday with a breeze making for a pleasant drive. We started out promptly at 10:00am led by Wagon Master Sue Martzolf with her team of Haflingers. There was a good turnout with a total of eleven wagons and carts and seven outrides (at least that’s how many I was able to count.)

The wagons included Jim Porter with his team of mules, Dolly Kouri with her mule and beautiful yellow and green wagon with the fringed top, Keven and Shannon Alcott with their daughters driving their team of mules, Windy Bailey with Kevin and her “Skunk Team” of mules, Mark and Cindy Mallory with their team of black mules and Clifford and Melissa Billingsley with their three up of mustangs. There was one other wagon and team, but I don’t know the name of the drive. The carts included Otis Calif with his team of mules, Jeanette Hayhurst with her team of minis, Linda Elder with her doctor’s buggy and Arab, and Suzie Figley with her cute paint mini. Outriders included Beth, Julie, Paul, Dan, Jackie, Dale and Nina. If I’ve missed any names, it was not intentional.The first part of the drive was across the road into a large area of a reclaimed oil field where we made a big

loop and then returned to camp for lunch.

After lunch, we went out for the pretty part of the drive through the Panorama View Preserve. After crossing a bridge over the river, we wound around through the preserve following the river, where the scenery included many types of new and old growth trees with dirt roads to follow. Drivers and riders all enjoyed the view and the chance to again enjoy their animals in this setting. We drove around for approximately two hours before returning to the camp where we took care of our stock and rested until dinner.

We gathered at the beautiful BBQ area at Jack’s Ranch for dinner. Jack and his wife Sharon, along with Becky, prepared some delicious BBQ chicken and teriyaki beef while the corral members provided the side dishes and desserts. As usual, all the food was delicious. Following the meal we had our corral meeting, and then everyone returned to the camp area. A camp fire was started, and Mike and Jeanette Hayhurst entertained us all with their songs.

Sunday morning, following breakfast on our own, some of the members packed up to return home while others went back out to drive through the Preserve. A couple of the outriders decided to play in the river before coming back to camp.

Everyone had a fun weekend enjoying being out with their mules and horses and friends for a drive. We had good weather and a good turnout.

Once again, Jim and Julie Porter hosted our Sumer Drive/Ride at their ranch in Onyx, California, where they had lots of room for parking and camping and pens available for people who wanted to use them. Some drivers and riders began arriving early Friday and took a short drive led by Jim Porter in the afternoon. Throughout the day and into the evening, people arrived to be ready for the Drive/Ride on Saturday. Friday evening, everyone was responsible for their own dinner and ate their meals in camp while visiting with friends they haven’t seen for a while and checking out new animals or wagons. Sue Martzolf showed off her beautiful new single horse carriage.

Saturday morning dawned clear and warm, and everyone was up early to tend to their stock before starting their own breakfast. Around 8 am, everyone began gathering up their animals to get ready for the drive, as the time to start was set for 9 am to try to avoid some of the hotter parts of the day. It was expected to be in the three digit numbers in the afternoon.

Last but not least of the outriders, Pat Turnham and her Bay horse and Kevin Kingsbury on his Sorrel. Sorry I didn’t have a picture of either of you.

We drove through the harsh, but beautiful, country around the Porter’s ranch for approximately 14 miles with several stops at the comfort wagon driven by JC Turnham for water and to rest the teams as well as a break for lunch. Despite the land looking fairly flat, there was a climb with a change of about 1,000 ft. in altitude, and the animals had a work out. We drove for approximately fi ve hours and had a great time. Everyone and their animals were tired by the time we reached camp. The animals were tended to, and then everyone relaxed until dinner time. Some people cooled off in the “pool”…a horse tank full of water. Dinner, as usual, was the wonderful Pot Luck

with all the delicious dishes prepared by our members. After such a busy day and with full stomachs, everyone seemed to go to bed early.

Sunday morning, we again woke early and took care of our stock and had a Pot Luck breakfast with egg dishes prepared by some of the members, leftovers from the night before, bacon and sausages along with sweet rolls. Some of the members packed up to go home while others left to make a two hour drive lead by Jim Porter.

We were all having a fun drive when I m a n a g e d to puncture one of the tires on the wagon. The mules didn’t like the sound of that at all. Thanks to all the wonderful other drivers and the equipment in their wagons, they were able to change the tire in no time, and we all returned to camp safely.

We wish to thank Jim and Julie Porter for their wonderful hospitality for our Summer Drive/Ride, for having pens available, plenty of space to park and camp and taking us on several wonderful drives. Jim is a thoughtful Wagon Master and Julie a wonderful outrider who helps be sure no one is left behind or lost.

Summer Equine TreatsFrozen Banana Mash Horse Treat(Great for hot summer days.)

Ingredients:4 Chopped frozen bananas (peel and all)4 cups Shredded carrots2 cups Grain2 cups Oatmeal1 cup Honey (optional)Ice

Directions: This is a no-bake, frozen treat for summer days.Chop bananas and freeze for at least 1 hour.Shred Carrots and gather other ingredients.Mix all ingredients in a bowl for additional freezing.Decide on small frozen treats or a large frozen block for your horse to work.Divide and freeze accordingly, in plastic containers.Pry frozen treat from bowl and off er to horse on a warm day.This treat can be served frozen or thawed, it’s up to you and your horse!

If served thawed, it can be a good delivery system for medication.

No-Bake Sweet Grain and Apple Horse Snack

Ingredients:1 large apple (hollowed) Sweet grainDry oatsShredded carrotsMolassesHoney

Directions:Hollow apple and set aside.Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.Fill the hollowed apple with the mixed ingredients.Store in refrigerator if not used right away.

Aside from making your own homemade horse treats or buying nutritious horse snacks from a reliable source, there are other quick, fun ways to pamper your horse with a good horse treat. These include…

Fresh fruits like apples, carrots, watermelon (including the rind), pineapple, pumpkin, strawberry and even kiwi are a nice occasional treats for horses.

Nutritious veggies like celery, sweet potato, lettuce, turnips, and so on are great for horses but be sure to avoid vegetables that are known to cause gastro-intestinal distress. When in doubt, skip it!

Will your horse love these tasty horse treat recipes and snacks? We bet they will! These ideas all deliver a combination of healthy, fresh, and wholesome ingredients that are sure to delight your favorite mounts. The only problem you’ll have is running out too soon!

Well, summer is offi cially upon us…June 20th summer solstice and the temperatures are rising. Always a good time to remind people how important it is to provide for your horses, to have fresh clean water readily available…Always! I have found rodents are falling into my troughs…some made it out, some did not. I really do not like to dump an entire trough of water, because a rodent has fouled the water. I am putting some smaller, closer to the ground, water sources hoping to keep the rodents

out of my 100-gallon and 50-gallon troughs. It will also help the quail to readily access the water.

Corral 83 members Carolyn McIntyre (President), Pam Ronning (VP) and Carol Hellyer (trail ride coordinator) are still making amazing progress on some trails in Stallion Springs…Especially the Horse Thief trail. It is great to have some of our old favorite trails reopened. Scotts Memorial is located on the Horse Thief trail, where you will experience an amazing view of Tejon Ranch and Southern San Joaquin Valley. Corral 83 plans to host a Poker Ride Fundraiser later this year, utilizing our Stallion Springs trails. Our corral is small, and our bank account refl ects our shrinking numbers in membership. Unlike last year when we were able to hire some help, the majority of the trail work that happens now is all volunteer, using their own personal equipment, gas to run equipment and their time to get to the worksite and get the work done. We welcome additional volunteer help. Carolyn or Pam would like to hear from anyone interested in helping.

The next big event to happen in our area is the Horse and Mule show in AUGUST! Yes, the horse and mule show will take place in Bear Valley Springs Friday-Sunday, August 7 – 9 at Bear Valley Equestrian Center. We fi nally had a ride on June 21 in Apple Valley. Even though it had gotten really hot, we had seven riders in the

saddle. Ray Sims led the ride and afterward gave out the goodie bags. They had lots of neat stuff in them. A scarf with the ETI 103 logo, hoof pick, small fi rst aid kit, lip balm, wet wipes and a small pack of tissues. Many thanks to Ray for his work putting this together and leading a good ride.

Next on our calendar is our Wrigthwood Ride on July 26. We will be staging at Inspiration Point. The weather should be much cooler up there. There will be no charge for ETI members. Phil and Melinda Smith will be leading the ride. A $5 Wilderness Pass will be required and can be gotten on line or at Big 5 store. Also, it can be purchased at the Jensen Store in Wrightwood. Bring your own lunch. Look for our fl yer on our facebook page, or contact Dawn Walker at delta3743@verizon.net, and I will email you a copy.

Horse Shows ETI has a National High Point Circuit which is currently on hiatus. Until then, please contact the ETI offi ce. Non-ETI members can participate in our ETI High Point Shows. But to be a part of the National High Point Circuit you must be an ETI member. You can sign up for the Circuit any time during the season, but must compete a specifi ed number of times in your chosen classes to win awards. Points towards year end awards start accumulating on the date you sign up with the high point program.

The Junior Ambassador Program is open to all ETI youth age 7 to 21. Boys are welcome for the Prince and King category. Applications for the program may be obtained by contacting Cheri Ovayan at (818) 335-2884 covayan97@icloud.com. The completed forms are due back by April 2nd with all fees, sponsors, autobiography and pictures. This is a great way for our youth to represent their Corral and ETI. Participants volunteer their time at several mandatory events as well as many horse shows; trail trials, parades, trail dedications, quarterly dinner meetings and fun events just for the Junior Ambassador Court such as the retreat! Contact Michelle or any of the girls who have participated for more info on the fun activities.

Trail Rider Award Program (TRAP) keeps computerized logs on how many hours members are riding. In this day and age, when trails are giving way to housing developments, it is crucial that records be kept on trail usage. ETI Corrals in all areas are fi nding themselves having to defend their

riding areas more and more against encroaching civilization. On several occasions, TRAP records have been instrumental in maintaining trail access.

ETI TRAP acknowledges hours in the saddle with shoulder patches & pins that can be attached almost anywhere. The fee to join TRAP is only $12.00 (you must maintain current ETI membership); then the TRAP membership is maintained each year for only $6.00. Trail Trials: An ETI Sanctioned Trail Trial consists of a trail ride, usually averaging between two and three hours, with trail obstacles along the way. Obstacles are natural, or simulate naturally occurring conditions for the horse and rider to negotiate. We now have a DVD from a clinic demonstrating obstacles and tips to compete or put on a Trail Trial. It is important to remember that the people doing the judging at sanctioned Trail Trial event are volunteers following the rulebook and are doing thwe best they can. Safety, control, and common sense are the number one priorities for all ETI sanctioned Trail Trials. Trail Trials are open to ETI members and Non-members.
