ESSAY - BUILDING A HOME
As I flip through the dusty pages of my photo album, my gaze falls upon a familiar toothless grin,
reminding me of a glass door, firmly cast, yet lets you soak in the sights of a peaceful paradise, a
Utopia you can never venture into again. But I let myself drown in dreams for just a moment.
Images of anebullient girl, waiting for Peter Pan to take her to Neverland, painfully flash before
my insipid orbs. She believed in a world where Salim, John, and Ram, all knelt before the same
altar, one of love. A Zion where people didn‟t fight over the languages they spoke or the states
they belonged to, for there was neither language nor region to separate, just gestures of
benevolence, with the Sun shining over the mountains and deserts with the same grace. The gates
that separated Lahore from Amritsar remained open forever and man could cross the boundaries
just as fearlessly as the eagle soaring overhead, with the wind nudging on her outspread wings.
There, the tulips of Kashmir were a vibrant red, not because they were stained with blood, but
because they symbolised the love an Indian had for her Pakistani neighbour. The pseudo-
geopolitical triggers of war, once secured under the coloured banner of religion had been burnt
and the mighty wind had blown the soot off. The air, once pungent with the smell of urine and
blood, had the aroma of florals. The atmosphere that was once full of shouts of protest was filled
with mellifluous melodies of love and brotherhood. There, the soldier could promise with
certainty that he‟d be back home for Christmas, and from the terrorist fell tears of penitence, not
the bomb. In that dreamland, every door in the town remained open even at night and the street
was devoid of beggars and robbers, for in a world where the joy felt on sharing overpowered the
pull of greed, there could not be aneed to beg or to rob. In that idyll, there were hospitals and
schools built in the place of refuge camps, for there was no need for the latter. There, parents
could confidently promise their child that they‟d never run out of clean air to breathe in, pure
water to drink and kindness and love to

ESSAY - BUILDING A HOME
give and receive. In that world, the colours of black and white blended into one hue of humanity,
no woman ever felt the need to put on make-up or seek protection and no man felt the need to be
stoic. Pens and books could be spotted in hands slender and plump, coloured and pale, of both
boys‟ and girls‟. A land of bliss where everybody, regardless of the gender, caste or creed could
claim their basic right- the right to dream and remain hopeful for the next sunrise.
But suddenly the loud sirens of an ambulance accompanied by the words “DEATH TOLL IN
SYRIA RISES TO 72 IN EVENT OF RECENT CHEMICAL ATTACKS” from the news
channels come crashing into my ears, not unlike the harsh reality they represented, startling me
out of my trance. Waves of helplessness and anger strike my heart with the power of the storm of
despair brewing inside, shaking my very core. Unexpectedly, a smudged scribble of a child
catches my eye...below a Toy Story poster was the scrawling of a much younger and more
hopeful me-„TO INFINITY…AND BEYOND!‟ I wake up from my melancholy musings and
take brisk steps into the dark alleyways of the poor and forgotten children of God. Something
stirs within and the strings of my heart twinge with a strangely familiar tune, I take out a small
notebook and a sharpened pencil and watch as a dark, thin palm gleefully receives it. Struck with
epiphany on watching the little girl smile, I wake up. I rejoice as I realize I have laid the
foundation for my peaceful paradise, a dream not to be dreamt but to be made. I understand that
you needn‟t wait for Peter Pan to come, rather become the Peter Pan in the world. After all, peace
isn‟t a distinct character to be singled out…it is our very existence, an integration of many
attributes that can bring about a smile on every face, install hope in every heart and give wings to
every dream. Now that I am fully awake I set out to light candles in the dark alleyway. There, my
mission begins.
