EDUCATION

Education is free and compulsory for all children between the ages of 5 - 16.

Children's education in England is normally divided into two separate stages

Primary education

Secondary school

From 5 to 11

From 11 to 16

there they can stay until they reach sixteen, seventeen or eighteen years of age.

Do children wear a school uniform? Most school in England require children to wear a school uniform.

The uniformBoys-Long grey or black trousers (shorts may be worn in the Summer)-White Shirt-School tie (optional in most primary schools)-Jumper or sweater with the school logo on. The colour is the choice of the schools.-Black shoes

GirlsGirls may wear skirts

In England term starts in September, the entry year is reception (R) and children must be 5 before August 31 the following year.

•English, •mathematics, •science, •Religious education, •history, •geography, •music, •art and crafts, •physical education, •information technology (computers) •foreign language.

The children attend school from Monday to Friday, from 08:55 - 15:15

Classrooms

In all classrooms there is a computer, overhead projector, an and flip chart

Music Room

The music room is well equipped, classes and individual lessons are held here.Many of the students play a variety of musical instruments.

Library

The library is used by all the classes weekly and also at lunch times.Every classroom has its own mini libraries too.

Computers

A computer suite

Computers are in the computer suit but there are also computers in every classroom.

Staffroom A room in a school which is for the use of the teachers when they are not teaching

School Hall

The hall is used for gymnastics, assemblies, eating lunch and is the place where they hold many events.

Playgrounds

Adventure playground

Areas designed for children to play in outside.

School Tests in England

Compulsory testing takes place at the ages of seven, eleven and fourteen in England and Scotland

All children in state schools are tested in English and mathematics at the ages of seven, 11 and 14, and pupils aged 11 and 14 are also tested in science.

Most young people take GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations at sixteen, and many take vocational qualifications, A/S and A levels (Advanced levels), at seventeen and eighteen.

Eton

A public school is an independent secondary school. Public schools in England are not run by the government. The entrance exams used by most public schools are known as Common Entrance exams and are taken at the age of 11 (girls) or 13 (boys).The most famous public schools are Eton, Harrow and Winchester.
