3HrCr brand guidelines : An introduction
In the competitive world of the leisure industry, the
Historic Rally Car Register has to meet with the expectations
of consumers in order to attract and retain them.
To do this it has to present itself in a professional way.
It has to be clear about what it is, what it does and why it’s
the market leader. One consistent voice, one consistent
visual identity, one brand – making it easy for the consumer
to recognise, understand, embrace and support.
These guidelines have been created to do just that.
Please follow them meticulously to ensure you play your part
in keeping the HRCR, Europe’s leading historic rally club.
Thank you.

The logo.
The Historic Rally Car Register (HRCR) logo has been updated to the version shown above.
All previous versions have been decommissioned and should no longer be used.

safe area (shown in pale blue)
This is the recommended minimum amount of clear space maintained around
the logo when using it in relation to other elements or the edge of a page.
This area around the logo is defined by the diameter of one of the clocks.
Minimum size
The logo should never be used smaller than 25mm wide.

Correct use
Only official logo files should be used. Never attempt to recreate the logo in any form.
These can be obtained from Tony Barron: admin@hrcr.co.uk or Alan Turner: me@alanturner.co
When using the logo never stretch or distort it from its
original proportions.

using the colour logo
To portray the brand at its very best and to maintain consistency, the logo should
always be reproduced in colour.
Should this not be possible then please contact Tony Barron: admin@hrcr.co.uk or
Alan Turner: me@alanturner.co
Do not attempt to use the colour logo for any other type of reproduction.
Official logos are available in a number of digital file formats and colour modes depending on the application. If you require a specific type of file that is not listed, please contact Tony or Alan above.
Choosing the right digital file
Colour mode – Logos are available in CMYK and RGB colour modes. In general,
CMYK files are used for 4-colour printing and RGB files for on-screen display.
iMPOrTanT: always ensure the colour mode of the logo is matched to the method of
output. never convert one colour mode to another as this will cause a shift in colour
from the original.
File type – The logo files are available as vector and image files. Please remember image files (JPEG and PNG), have a limited resolution which deteriorates in quality when used in excess of 100%. Therefore these files have a maximum size included in their file description (e.g. HRCR_Colour_100mm.jpeg). In contrast, vector files can be used at any scale without loss of quality. In addition, all logo files have a clear/transparent background – with exception to JPEG files which have a white background.

A range of colours chosen to compliment the Primary colours and for use in supporting visual elements. Unlike the primary colours, the secondary colours Can be reproduced as a percentage tint of the original colour.
12Brand fonts : Introduction
Choice of Fonts
Following a similar rationale to the selection of the colours, the fonts have also been chosen to retrospectively
reflect those fonts popular during the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. Many of these are ‘modern interpretations’ instead of the actual fonts, so that rather than living in the past we are creating new history.
If a rally driver used this method
on the Alpine Rally, for instance, he
would need a new pair of arms at
the end. Another advantage of the
straight-arm method of steering is
the greater control it gives of tail
swing, as it is a more rapid method
of moving from one lock to another.

15supporting messages: Brand positioning
The Home of Historic RallyingThe HrCr strapline
Within a very specialised leisure activity – and one that has many competitor
organisations – the HRCR strapline is used to help differentiate the club from others by defining what is unique and aspirational about it.
Formed in 1984 it was the first organisation of its kind and has since become Europe’s leading club within historic rallying scene. As the ‘original’ (and best), it remains central to the sport as both an entry and focal point for enthusiasts.
‘The Home of Historic Rallying’ is an enviable brand position that no other
organisation can occupy.
using the strapline with the logo
The strapline can be used alongside the logo as shown opposite. The preferred
font is Alternative Gothic No.2, set in upper and lower case. The distance between the bottom of the logo and the top of the lowercase letters is half the
diameter of the rally clocks. The ‘safe area’ around the logo is then extended to include the strapline.

The HrCr website address
When using the web address it should be typeset as shown above.
It should never include the prefix ‘www.’ and should always have the letters ‘HRCR’ in capital letters and ‘.co.uk’ in lowercase.
Where a font does not have lowercase letters it is acceptable to
have ‘.co.uk’ in capital letters as shown below.
17supporting messages: 30th Anniversary
30 years of historic rallying
To celebrate and promote the 30th Anniversary of the Historic
Rally Car Register, an official emblem has been created. This should be used in all instances when promoting the Anniversary.
Official files have been created and these can be obtained from Tony Barron: admin@hrcr.co.uk or Alan Turner: me@alanturner.co
The emblem should not be used smaller than 35mm wide.
The emblem should always be reproduced in colour. Should this not
be possible then please contact Tony or Alan above. Do not attempt
to use the colour logo for any other type of reproduction.
The preferred background colour for the emblem to be placed on is Petrol Blue (detailed on page 11).

ROAD RALLy CHAMPIONSHIP
HRCR HIsTORIC ROAD RAllYINg
SPEED SERIESHILL CLIMB & SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP
The HRCR coordinates an annual series
of historic road rallies in which clubman
competitors participate in driving and
navigational challenges and at a fraction of
the cost of the big-name classic rallies. 2015
celebrates the championship’s 21st year.
These popular single-day historic
road rallies offer real tests for driver-
navigator partnerships, each rally having
a combination of regularity sections on
quiet and scenic back-roads and timed
special tests at private venues. They all run
in daylight hours only, some events on a
Saturday, others on a Sunday, each covering
between 120 and 150 miles. With entry fees
usually around £110 per event, including
lunch and a meal at the finish for the crew,
they can’t be any more affordable.
Events in the series are geographically
spread around England and Wales. Nine
historic rallies are on the calendar for 2015,
all reassuringly similar in many ways but
interestingly different in others.
On these historic road rallies which are
organised and marshalled by motor clubs
local to each area, you’ll be mixing with a
great variety of historic vehicles. All events
in the series are run to MSA National-B
regulations for which Competition Licences
are easily obtained for driver and navigator.
Cars do have to comply with the MSA
historic road rally vehicle regulations, which
allow cars manufactured up to the end
of 1985. However, preparation and special
equipment required is kept to a minimum.
Don’t be worried about the navigation.
Routes use the excellent Ordnance Survey
Landranger maps and finding the correct
route is seldom too difficult for novice
navigators, as organisers want everyone to
get to the finish having enjoyed the day.
Still worried that you’ll find it all too
difficult? – then enquire about the HRCR’s
scheduled training days, when experienced
competitors give instruction in all aspects
of historic road rallying.

This exciting new championship is designed
to add yet another dimension to the range
of events in which members can enjoy and
compete in their cars.
Uniquely this championship has a massively
broad appeal due to the type of cars
that can take part. It is open to standard
road-going classics, historic road and stage
prepared rally cars and even, for those
fortunate to own such machinery, Group B
rally cars.
In addition, the aim is to offer members
the opportunity to use their cars in
competition and ‘in anger’ but amidst a
more relaxed social environment.
The championship will run under a
closed-to-club permit, open to members
of the HRCR.
The individual events that make up the
championship are run by trusted and
established organisers and have been
specially selected by the HRCR. They
include both hill climb and sprint events.
There are eleven events to choose from –
six hill climbs and five sprints – with the
best six scores to count.
The popular Brecon MC event on Epynt is
a ‘double header’ for those who would like
to make a weekend of it. However you can
compete on just the one day if you so wish.
The championship will run to the MSA Blue
Book, Sprints and Hill Climbs regulations.
Vehicle preparation is minimal, especially
if your car is already prepared for historic
competition. Competitors are required to
wear overalls, flame-resistant gloves, and a
helmet. All the above have to conform to
the regulations detailed in the 2015 MSA
Blue Book.
The registration fee to be part of the
championship is just £20.
The classes for vehicles are as follows:
ClAss 1 Cars built up to 31st Dec 1959
ClAss 2 Cars built between 1st Jan 1960
and 31st Dec 1967
ClAss 3 Cars built between 1st Jan 1968

SCENIC TOURSDRIVING EVENTS FOR CLASSICS 1
The HRCR, in association with Classics by
JSWL, promotes a Scenic Tour Series of
specially selected and recommended events
that are guaranteed to be great value and
good fun.
The events use routes through outstanding
scenery stopping off at interesting places
along the way, making them great whether
you’re behind the wheel or not.
Navigation is simple – usually a road book
of simple diagrams (Tulips) which eliminate
the need to read a map – and some events
include code boards or passage checks so
you know you’re on the right route.
Timing is only used to spread cars out on the
road giving the crews time to socialise and
relax and enjoy the scenery.
You don’t require a competition licence
but your car does need to be safe and road
legal. All classics are welcome and some
organisers accept ‘modern’ classics.

The Home of Historic Rallying
HISTORIC RALLYINGWITH THE HRCR
The Historic Rally Car Register has been at the heart of the historic rally scene for over 30 years.
Founded in 1984, it was the first
organisation of its kind and is now
the largest. Originally formed by
a group of enthusiasts as a way of
documenting original ‘Works’ rally
cars, such was the interest that soon
a whole new genre of events was
created to relive the ‘golden age’ of
rallying. And so the historic rally
scene was born.
31 years on and the Historic Rally Car
Register, with its President Paddy
Hopkirk, is ‘the’ club to join for anyone
with an interest in Historic Rallying –
the branch of motor sport dedicated
to the types of cars that were rallied
from the 1950’s through to the 1980’s.
HRCR members can be found
supporting all forms of historic rallying
in Britain and abroad, as drivers,
navigators, organisers, marshals and
spectators. From the Welsh lanes and
Yorkshire forests to the famous
passes of the Alps.
As ‘the Home of Historic Rallying’ the
Historic Rally Car Register is where
the classic rally community gathers
and shares its passion – why not join
in and be part of the action.

COMPETINg IN YOuR CAR
Historic rallying is all about recreating the challenge and excitement of competing
during the ‘golden age’ of rallying, using cars that were rallied from the 1950’s through
to the 1980’s. It is one of the more affordable and friendly forms of motor sport.
Whether you already have a classic car or are thinking of acquiring one to use for
historic rallies, it will need to fall into one of four age-related MSA historic vehicle
categories in order to be eligible for competitive events.
The category of car you drive (and sometimes the engine size) determines which
‘Class’ you will compete in for awards, in addition to any overall awards. Category 4
cars, being the most modern, are not usually eligible for overall awards. Vehicle event
classes mean you compete fairly against cars of a similar age and performance. In a
similar manner, historic rallies involving map navigation will often have classes split
by driver and navigator experience, such as Master, Expert and Novice.
Vehicle safety and performance modifications vary depending on what type of
competition you choose to do, but in principle cars can only be fitted with period
modifications – ie. recognised modifications that were available for your car and
used in rallying. Later and more modern modifications are not permitted.

The HRCR is proud to offer five different ways you can go
historic rallying in your classic car in 2015.
Our highly successful Scenic Tours Series and our Road and Stage Rallying
Championships are to be joined in 2015 by two new additions; the HRCR Speed
Series and the HRCR Premier Rally Championship, adding an even broader choice
of driving experiences and competition to our members. All have many different
things to offer depending on how you want to use your car (or cars), what kind of
driving experience you want, and how competitive you want to be.
Also new for 2015 is a two day Road Rally based on the very successful ‘Classic 30’
format. The Devon Classic Rally, which takes place from 25th-27th September,
is organised by South Hams MC and supported by the HRCR. For further details

Please be aware that events and dates are correct at time of print but are liable to change. Please refer to the HRCR website for any updates and contact the individual organisers for confirmation of details.
The Premier Rally Championship is
organised by the HRCR with the assistance of
Dan Pidgeon of BritishRoadRallying.com
This all-new rallying initiative from the
HRCR, is a national road rally championship
with a wide range of events that caters for all
types of car – historic, vintage and modern.
Embraced within the championship is a
scheme where points can be won in any
three Endurance Rally permit events, and
any three Targa Rally permit events, and
two longer events: The Three Castles and
The Flying Scotsman, as well as traditional
night Road Rally and Navigational Rally
permit events. The championship also
includes all of the rounds in the HRCR
Clubmans Road Rally Championship.
The championship is designed to be a
National Road Rally Championship with a
very wide range of style of events, in effect
embracing all styles of road rallying for all
the very varied types of car competing.
It is not ‘car based’ with eligibility and
scrutineering standards - if it fits the event
that is a round of the Premier Championship,
the car is eligible. It’s chiefly designed for
people - not specific cars.
Approved by the MSA, the championship
requires membership of the HRCR and an
entry-fee of £20.

HISTORIC RALLy CHAMPIONSHIP
STAGERoldAn all-new road rallying initiative based around the crew rather than the car. A single championship that allows you to mix cars and events.
If you want to experience some full-on sideways action then welcome to the closed roads and forest tracks of Historic Stage Rallying.
These single or multi day events give you
the unique opportunity to challenge
yourself on some of the UK’s most famous
rally stages ‘flat out’ in your classic rally car.
Test your skills on a mixture of asphalt and
gravel events – all come complete with
plenty of high quality stage miles and a mass
of spectators and media coverage too.
But this is not purely a playground for the
experts. The sport and the HRCR welcomes
novice crews and a lot of support,
assistance and camaraderie is shared
amongst competitors.
The popular ‘old Stager’ Historic Rally
Championship, organised by the HRCR,
returns for 2015 thanks to the support
of our sponsors; Mintex, Minisport and
REIS. Our aim is to promote a simple,
no nonsense, closed-to-club stage rally
championship for club members. The
format will be a six round championship
with seven scores available and your best
four scores to count. The rounds have
been selected for their value for money
and variety to provide an exciting and
challenging championship for the clubman.
The championship is run to MSA
regulations for historic rally cars, to
provide a level playing field for all. To enter
the championship you will need to be a
member of the HRCR and hold an MSA
National B or higher grade competition
licence and your car will need to comply
with the MSA historic stage rally vehicle
categories 1, 2, 3 and 4 (inc. FIA Appendix K
cars) and regulations.
There will be separate awards for each
category, no overall winner. With famous
names: Paddy Hopkirk providing the
Trophy for the Category 1 Championship
and Phil Mills the award for Category 4.
Regular media partners Retro Speed will
support the Category 2 Championship
and the HRCR the Category 3. The popular
Mini and Imp Cups will be retained, these
challenges are for the factory derivatives of
these models and the challenge is open to
models from any of the age categories. All
Minis and Imps will run with the Category 1
cars. Tyre choice will be free as long as
they comply with MSA requirements for
historic cars.
The registration fee for the new
championship, launched at the HRCR Open
Day, will be a competitive £40 per crew.

Scenic Tours are a series of social driving events promoted by the HRCR
giving classic car owners the opportunity to use their pride and joy on
a ‘rally style’ event but without the competitive element.
Using simple navigation, events are staged all around the country
and take place throughout the year.
They are run along some of the most beautiful country roads in Britain
– stopping off for refreshments at some super locations along the way.
You don’t need a competition licence, be a motor club member or have
special insurance. You just need a classic car and willing passenger to
share in the fun!

Calendar of Events for 2014
Since 1995, these popular single-day historic road rallies have been
making competitive motorsport affordable and accessible for hundreds
of classic car owners. Typically an event covers around 130 miles of
regularity road sections along with a number of timed special tests at
private venues – providing an exciting challenge for both drivers and
navigators, and experts and novices alike.
Your car will need to meet certain safety standards and can only be
fitted with period modifications. You will need a competition licence,
HRCR membership and special insurance for events, all of which are
reasonably priced. Navigation and timing is fairly easy to understand
and you can join one of our training days to help get you started.
So why not join in and be part of the action!

Introducing a new two day road rally based on the successful ‘Classic 30’
format, set in the stunning Devon scenery between Exeter and Okehampton.
The Devon Classic Rally – designed to encourage newcomers to the sport
by not penalising heavily for mistakes and making it an enjoyable learning
experience for novice crews – is organised by South Hams Motor Club, lead by
Rally of the Tests winner Andy Ballantyne and supported by the HRCR.
This great value event includes accommodation, meals and the rally itself,
making it the ideal event to enter in 2015.
