Introduction to the course

Welcome to A Level Economics. The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Economics A is

structured into four themes and consists of three externally examined papers. Students build knowledge

and understanding of core economic models and concepts in Themes 1 and 2, and then build on this

and apply their knowledge to more complex concepts and models in Themes 3 and 4. Students will

need to apply their knowledge and understanding to both familiar and unfamiliar contexts in the

assessments and demonstrate an awareness of current economic events and policies. In May/June 2022

your final assessments will consist of 3 x 2-hour exam papers, with the first two counting 35% and the

last paper 30% of the total qualification. Currently we do not offer an AS level on this course and as such

you must complete both years of study to gain a qualification.

5

Quantitative skills

Throughout the course of study, students will develop competence in the quantitative skills listed below. There are

opportunities for students to develop these skills throughout the content and they are required to apply the skills

to relevant economic contexts.

The assessment of quantitative skills will include at least Level 2 mathematical skills and quantitative skills 1 to 9 will

constitute a minimum of 20% of the overall marks for this qualification.

Why study Economics?

There aren’t many A-level subjects as dynamic as Economics. The news is full of examples of Economics in action

such as:

How Economics can help provide answers to the challenges of climate change and environmental damage

The winners and losers from increasing protectionism

The future of work in an era of artificial intelligence

The following pages outline the summer activities that we are asking you to complete before the new term starts

in September.

Summer work activity 1

The basic Economic problem

First, watch the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9IjktFC9Tg&list=PLWeicFreBUYCOFC2A0SlKrpEYgwaSF63t

Explain the economic problem that all countries face.

Watch now the following video on the economics of cigarette consumption;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpVpOMFL7fA

What is the cost to the NHS of treating smoking-related illnesses?

Consider 3 policies that you would use that could possibly reduce cigarette smoking.

For each policy, consider 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages.

16

Summer work activity 2

Go to the following website www.senecalearning.com/

If you have an account log in, if not create one for free with your current school’s email address.

Join my class with the class code: zx96til12828

Complete the assignment – Unit 1

Social Science

watch this video: https://youtu.be/BiLj35g_cAU

For each of the following scenarios, consider assumptions to support these theories and limitations. Remember,

the point here is to acknowledge the vast number of variables involved in a social science like Economics.

25

Economic argument Assumptions underlying the argument. Limitations of this argument/other factors to be considered.

Building more flats will reduce house prices and help resolve the housing crisis.

Increasing the minimum wage will make those on lower incomes better off.

Taxing the rich more will increase government revenue and benefit society.

Building more grammar schools would increase income inequality.

Scrapping tuition fees would increase government debt.

26

Thinking Further Challenge…

Economic models, comprising of simplified representations of reality, are mostly theorised in economics instead of

actual experiments. Explain why such experiments are so difficult, provide examples where possible.

27

Summer work activity 5

Write at least 500 words answering the following question from the Financial Times:

https://bit.ly/3dNf5Ac

Will the coronavirus crisis rehabilitate the banks? This second FT article https://on.ft.com/2UxaiuS will give you some information on the differences

between this crisis and the 2008 financial recession caused by banks.

This is a structure to help you writing your assignment:

Pick one point in favour of banks and one against them to introduce your writing.

Now explain why you agree with the question and why you disagree with it. Remember to always

refer to relevant lines from the articles you just read to support your arguments.

Try to be balanced in your judgement. If you feel that you strongly disagree with the article

explain why but always supporting your point with evidence which is not biased by a generic

criticism.

Criticize your own point. Think, for example, of possible ways someone else with an opposite view

could explain the same argument.

Conclude by weighing up the different viewpoints analysed.
