Parshat Matot-Masei Parsha Theme: Keeping Promises and Creating the Map Parshat Matot starts off with a discussion about the laws behind taking a vow. Bnei Yisrael win the war against Midian through a team effort: 12,000 men participated,1,000 from each tribe. As a result of their victory, Bnei Yisrael made great donations to the Mishkan, and to the Kohanim and Leviim. Yehoshua and Elazar were in charge of distributing land amongst 10 tribes, while Gad and Reuven settled on the outskirts to provide a better environment for their livestock. The Leviim were given cities throughout Israel which were turned into Arai Miklat or safe havens. After Shul Ask your Children
Which two tribes stayed on the outskirts of Bnei Yisrael and why? Towards whom did Bnei Yisrael donate? What were the Arai Miklat? How was the war with Midian a team effort? What does it mean to take a vow?
