From the Principal: Congratulations to the Class of 2013! We are very proud of their accomplishments during their four years at Eastern Tech. At our recent graduation ceremony we congratulated the class for having earned approximately $6 million dollars in scholarships and grants based on their academic achievements. We also announced the fact that 95% of our graduating seniors will be entering college in the fall with 54% planning to attend 4 year schools; 41% attending CCBC. Eight (8) of our students are electing to serve our country by enlisting in the military – 2 Army, 3 – Marines, 3 – Air Force and, of course, this year’s Class President, Andrew Cho attending the US Naval Academy - a few are going directly into the work world and one into Cosmetology school. We offer special congratulations to Class Valedictorian Charles Parker for graduating with a 4.0 GPA and for taking 13 Advanced Placement courses during his years at Eastern Tech and 14 AP tests.
We wish all of our graduates the very best for the future and hope that everyone from the Class of 2013 finds a way to continue their education. If you were unable to attend this year’s ceremony and would like a copy of the program which includes a list of our seniors and their numerous individual accomplishments and college plans, please contact our guidance office.
Congratulations to Eastern Tech! As you may know, Eastern Technical High School has been named to all three of the national rankings as one of “America’s Best High Schools” for 2012-2013. These rankings are done by Newsweek Magazine, U. S. News & World Report and the National High School Challenge of the Washington Post. Newsweek and US News rank schools based on their Advanced Placement scores and academic performance of all students. “The Challenge List, compiled and published by The Washington Post, is an annual project that ranks the nation’s best high schools based on academic rigor. From more than 27,000 high schools across the nation, the list spotlights more than 1,900 high schools that represent the top 9 percent of high schools in the nation, based on total student participation in highly rigorous coursework and exams.” We are extremely proud of our students and teachers for helping us maintain each of these national rankings. This is the 6th year in a row for us to be cited by Newsweek and US News and we’ve been named all three times that the Washington Post has released this particular “Challenge” ranking. We look forward to the new challenges of the 2013-2014 school year and to the new energy that the incoming Class of 2017 will bring to our school. Have a wonderful summer vacation! Thomas G. A Message from the After Prom Chairperson… Again this year, Eastern Tech’s After Prom Senior Party was a huge success. Most of the senior class attended the party May 18th at the AMF Country Club Lanes. Seniors and guests enjoyed bowling, lots of food, games, prize wheels, corn-hole, and henna designs. The celebration was one of the final events for the seniors to enjoy as a class and will be a fond memory of their farewell to high school days. The PTSA would like to extend a sincere thank you to all who helped make this year’s After Prom senior party a success. The event would not have been possible without the support of many who believe in providing a safe, fun event for the seniors on Prom night. Thank you to PTSA President Kelly Bowers, Terri Maciszewski, Lisa Broznowicz, Jenn Ordak, Julie Wiseman, Kathleen Wiles, and Kathy Thompson, who organized fund raisers throughout the year and gave many hours of their time to benefit the After Prom party. Thanks also to the 37 volunteers who worked the night of the party. As always, our Principal, Mr. Thomas Evans, and Administrative Secretary, Gayle Clark were extremely supportive of our efforts to provide a safe and memorable event for our seniors and we thank them for their assistance. Sincere thanks and appreciation also goes to Mr. Francis McGrath, Senior Class advisor, who worked tirelessly for the Senior class and was a great advocate for the after prom senior party. The After Prom party was made possible through the combined efforts of many, including those who provided prizes, food and monetary contributions. We would like to extend a special thanks to the following sponsors for their donations and support of the After Prom party and their belief in providing a safe environment for our seniors.

2013 Eastern Tech Summer Reading Program
Summer reading is designed to challenge students to become life-‐long readers and learners by exploring personal connections to various texts that promote intellectual growth, social awareness, and independent thinking.
Summer reading helps students open their eyes to the larger world and promotes a love for the written word in all its varied forms.
The Eastern Tech Summer Reading Program has been revised and is now modeled on a community read concept. Community reads are simple yet powerful. Members of a community read and discuss the same book at the same
time. Cities, towns, and even states have promoted community read programs because they bring people together through the reading and discussion of a common book. Participation in the Eastern Tech community read project will involve reading a selection based upon the students’ grade level. Grades 9 and 10 will be reading
Outcasts United by Warren St. John and grades 11 and 12 will be reading Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a Chemical Boyhood by Oliver Sacks. Copies of these selections have been distributed to students for their use over the summer. All students, including AP students, are required to read the selected title for his or her grade level.
During the first weeks of September students will meet during an activity period to complete a short quiz and to discuss the ideas reflected in the book.
Outcasts United: an American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman's Quest to Make a Difference by Warren St. John. This is an extraordinary tale of a refugee youth soccer team and the transformation of a small American town. American-‐educated Jordanian Luma Mufleh founds a youth soccer team comprised of children from Liberia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkan states, and elsewhere in the refugee settlement town of Clarkston, Georgia, bringing the children together to discover their common bonds as they adjust to life in a new homeland. Outcasts United: an American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman's Quest to Make a Difference has been selected because it fits a broad range of reading abilities and interests, is
relevant to young adult experience, attempts to stretch students intellectually, and because it exposes students to a variety of ideas and/or cultures. The selection has earned positive reviews and awards for its literary value, and it is recognized as suitable for high school young adult readers. Uncle Tungsten: Memories of a Chemical Boyhood by Oliver Sacks. Long before Oliver Sacks became a distinguished neurologist and bestselling writer, he was a small English boy fascinated by metals–also by chemical reactions (the louder and smellier the better),
photography, squids and cuttlefish, H.G. Wells, and the periodic table. In this endlessly charming and eloquent memoir, the author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Awakenings chronicles his love affair with science and the magnificently odd and
sometimes harrowing childhood in which that love affair unfolded. In Uncle Tungsten we meet Sacks’ extraordinary family, from his surgeon mother (who
introduces the fourteen-‐year-‐old Oliver to the art of human dissection) and his father, a family doctor who imbues in his son an early enthusiasm for house calls, to his “Uncle Tungsten,” whose factory produces tungsten-‐filament light bulbs. We follow the young Oliver as he is exiled at the age of six to a grim, sadistic boarding school to escape
the London Blitz, and later watch as he sets about passionately reliving the exploits of his chemical heroes–in his own home laboratory. Uncle Tungsten is a crystalline view of a brilliant young mind springing to life, a story of growing up which is by turns elegiac, comic, and wistful, full of the electrifying joy of discovery.
