From the inspiration of Torri, point, line and plane can be seen from different perspectives. It may be a line but when you see from the side, it becomes a point.

With the intersection of different lines, they create points. On the other hand, planes can also be seen as lines. All lines go through the plane from one side to the other side.

1.2 MASS

Exploring the underground spatiality.

“Mass” to me is very heavy and darkness. The thick charcoal represents the underground world and the darkness inside a space, the white represents light, the blur represents the the transformation from the light space to dark space.

Imagine the drawing becomes 3D like a tunnel, different thick-ness of Charcoal may represent different depth of the space. I expect audiences have different interpretation of my drawing from 2D bringing to 3D in terms of the shape.

My frame and infill model is made of many cubes, crashing together. The cubes are dividing space and creating space. They interact with each other and being connected with some triangular panels. The triangular panels are restricted inside the cubes and looks like cracking and this idea is inspired by the ABC Museum by Aranguren & Gallegos Architects and an architectural model by Sou Fujimoto.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS

There is a series of environmental sculptures in Herring Island, which are scat-tered throughout the park. The original concept of bringing sculptures into the park was inspired by the European tradition of placing artwork into recre-ational spaces.

By using natural materials such as stone, earth and wood, the artists focus on the history and landscape of the island to create pieces and make them become part of the landscape.

Subtraction

The space being subtracted on the ground forms the space underground. Although space is subtracted, it creates void to the underground space.

2.2 CONCEPTACLE

The composition of point line plane, mass and frame & infill.

Three of the things are intersecting each other, lines become the infill of the frame, the formation of planes create space which is the form of mass. The shape of the model is from the 2D of the mass drawing into a 3D space.

Black is a very dark colour which gives a heavy mass feeling.

2.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The site is near the south pier. After arriving Herring Island by crossing the river, walking up from the pier, my Secret Project is just opposite the picnic area.

People keep their secret, tell their secret and create their secret when they land the island. After travelling around the island, they have a new experi-ence and have different point of view to their secret. They can keep their new secret before leaving the island.

Secret is privacy.

Everyone has his or her own secret. If someone else knows the secret, it is not a secret anymore.

There should be personal space for one to keep secrets. The difference in level of the model creates mysterious when somone stands inside. The corners creates privacy which can be further developed.

There are six underground 1x1x0.5m cubes scattered around the main block. They represent the six sculpture areas on the island. A lid has to be opened to get in .

The undergound area can be accessed by stairs inside the main block or same as the six cubes, by opening the lid and climbing down.

The site model in 1:200 shows the resemble of the 6 little secret boxes and the main secret block.

To present better the structure of the design, I made a sectional model in the scale 1:100 which can be separated the three parts - two above ground and one underground.

3.0 REFLECTION

Throughout the 12 weeks, I spent 6 weeks on the three relationships and 6 weeks on the Secret Project. I remembered one of the lectures tell us to draw out the process, from generating ideas (idiosyncratic languages), realizing ideas (standardized languages) to explaining ideas (social languages). I think all the modules show a flow that how my Secret project is developed. The three projects and conceptacle model are all my thinking process which help me to work out my final project on Herring Island, linking back to “Secrets”. Everyone’s approach to Secret is different so there are different interpretation of “Secrets” in the final project which is very interesting.

I found the conceptacle model the most challenging for me. I struggled for a long time on how to put the three tectonics together. I started with converting my mass model from 2D to 3D, and create void. I thought about the relationship among on the ground, above ground and below ground. The corresponding architectural tectonics do not need to be restricted by the ground, mass can be developed above ground and be presented by the use of different materials. At first I did not know how to put the three elements together, no matter how I put them they seems like just add on to each other but not really combining to each other. Or otherwise, they look totally different from all the projects. However as what Leonardo da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Sometimes we just think in a way too complicated, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” –Albert Einstein.

My final model sticks with the idea of my conceptacle model – subtraction. Subtracting the space above ground and create the void underground becomes my design language in my Secret project. The thing I can improve more is the use of materials. Most of my models are made of cardboard and I think next time I can try more media like Perspex, concrete, 3D printing or even metal. I have to expose myself to more materials as different materials have different texture to give different feelings and experience.

Last but not least, I want to thank my tutor for giving me so much guidance throughout the whole semester, he always give me useful comments and advice which inspire me a lot. I also want to thank my classmates for having so many good designs and models that I can learn from.
