About MombasaReknown for its sandy beaches and
fabulous beach hotels, Mombasa is
the second-largest city in Kenya,
with a population of over one
million people. A regional cultural
and economic hub, Mombasa has a
prominent port and an international
airport, and is an important regional
tourism centre. Situated on the east
coast of Kenya, in Coast Province,
Mombasas bordering the Indian Ocean made it a historical
trading centre, and it was successively controlled by a numbe
of countries due to its strategic location. Administratively,
Mombasa is the capital of, and is coincident with Mombasa
County.
Weather:
November is traditionally one of the hotter months of the yea
in Mombasa with temperatures ranging between lows of 23
and highs of 32 C. Though possible, rain is unusual during th
time of the year.

About the ConferenceThe 18th Annual Conference and General Meeting of
the East Africa Law Society will take place on the 15th
and 16th November, 2013 in the Kenyan coastal resort
city of Mombasa.
Themed Raising the Bar: The Changing
Environment for the Legal Profession in East
Afr ica,the conference aims to bring together over
1000 legal practitioners drawn from across the region
to discuss emerging trends in the legal profession
and to identify avenues for taking advantage of these
emerging trends.
In keeping with tradition, the EALS AGM will also
provide varied opportunities for networking and
relaxation to keep true to its mantra as the definitive
networking and social event for the legal profession in
East Africa. On this front, we have lined up an extensive
list of activities to engage you our members and yourguests to ensure that you not only learn from the visit
but also get a chance to sample the local culinary and
social delights in Mombasa. You will find an extensive
list of tours and excursions, historical sites to visit as

Leading Law Firms Forum - 14th November,
2013
Now in its 3rd year and growing from strength to
strength, the Leading Law Firms Forum has continued
to carve out its space as one of the flagship events of the
EALS Annual Conference. Starting with just 10 regionallaw firms in 2011, the forum attracted over 22 regional
and international law firms last year. This years
edition bears the hallmark of an even more successful
event with the confirmation of the International
Bar Associations participation in providing resource
persons and global perspectives.
Representatives from 7 international firms will be on hand
to share their knowledge on building successful firms that
transcend their founders; and hopefully establish networks
with potential local and regional partners.
This years forum shall be held aboard a sailing Dhow
courtesy of the prestigious Tamarind Dhow Restaurant
in Mombasa famed as one of Kenyas best seafood
restaurants.

Gala Dinner - 15th November, 2013
The traditional gala dinner on the evening of the EALS Annual
Conferences has always been a place for legal professionals
across East Africa to catch up after a year of the hustle and
bustle that legal practice brings along with it. This years gala
dinner will be hosted by the EALS on the magnificent palm
tree lined lawns of the Sarova Whitesands Resort, entertained
by live music from one of Kenyas leading bands.
The dinner is open
to all registered
members and you
are all invited to
attend.
East Africa Law Society Golf
Tournament - 17th November, 2013
With the proud support of the 18 hole Baobob Golf
Course located at the Vipingo Ridge in Kilifi, the EALS will
hold a registration only golf tournament on Sunday 17th
November, 2013.
The location of the course, having spectacular views of
the Indian Ocean to the east and the vast African interior
with its stunning sunsets to the west, gives golfers a
fantastic visual of one of the most impressive areas of
natural beauty in Kenya.
Please note that only pre-registered delegates will be
allowed to access the golf course and par ticipate in

Family AttractionsFort Jesus
Fort Jesus (Forte Jesus de Mombaa) isa Portuguese fort built in 1591 by order of King Philip
I of Portugal (King Philip II of Spain), then ruler of
the joint Portuguese and Spanish Kingdoms, located
on Mombasa Island to guard the Old Port
of Mombasa, Kenya. It
was built in the shape of
a man (viewed from the
air), and was given the
name of Jesus. In 2011, the
fort was declared a World
Heritage Site by UNESCO,

highlighted as one of the most outstanding and well
preserved examples of 16th century Portuguese militar y
fortifications.
Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve
The marine park is located in Mombasa town
along the Kenyan coast.
The park comprises of the
sea waters, mangroves, seagrasses, and sea weeds. The
park is home to variety of
marine life e.g. Crabs, Sea
urchins, Sea cucumbers, Sea
Stars/Starfish, Sea Jellies.
Other spectacular attractions
include the sand beach and
coral gardens. The park is a
popular snorkeling and diving
location.
Mombasa Haller Park
Formerly known as Bamburi Nature Trail until 1999,
Haller Park is a unique ecological restored quarry
situated on the North Coast of Mombasa along the
Mombasa Malindi road, next to the Bamburi Cement
factory. Open to the public for the last 21 years, the
Nature Park Sanctuary is home to a variety of plant and
animal species that serve as attractions to local and
international visitors from all walks of life.
Old Town Mombasa
The old town
of Mombasa

to the heritage
of Mombasa as
Kenyas second
largest city,
occupying an area
of approximately
72 hectares. It is
inhabited by a diverse
community consisting
of locals, Arabs, Asians, Portuguese and the British who
have co-existed for hundreds of years. The various social
political, religious and economic activities of these
groups have created a distinct character and culture
that continues to define this seemingly timeless town.
This unique character is immortalised in the historicalbuildings some of which date from as far back as the
18th century, and combine African, Arabic and European
influences.

everyone ranging from hip lounges to vibrant nightclubs
that play a stimulating blend of the latest East African and
International hits. A lawyers night is also planned at one
of Mombasas top nightclubs on the evening of the 16th
November.
