Transactional analysis increases

understanding of self & others. It

decreases tendency to be critical of

self & others. TA helps to reduce

stress, frustration & anxiety levels

Structural Analysis

Technique to analyze a persons thought,

feelings, behaviors based on the phenomena of

ego states.

Ego state is the consistent pattern of feeling and

experience directly related to the pattern of

behavior.

The three ego states are :

Parent

Adult

Child

Taught concept of life.

Personality borrowed from our parents

Recorded during the parent’s childhood.

Nurturing – Caring , concerned, protective, worried ,

forgiving, reassuring

Critical- opinionated, powerful, principled, punitive &

demanding

Adult

Thought concept of life

Adult updates parent data & determines what is

valid & what is not.

Adult updates Child data & determine which

feelings can be expressed safely.

Adult is data processing computer.

Child

New Child - represents the way weare when we are born

New Child - Impulsive, spontaneous,expressive, infant, curious,aggressive, rebellious, carefree,fearful & affectionate, self-centered

Adapted Child - that part of child thatexhibits modification of the NC’sinclinations.

Adapted Child - Complying, withdrawing,procrastination & rebellion

Little Professor - operates without good rational& relies on fantasy , intuition & magical thinking.

Involves the use of only one ego state by theinitiator & one by the responder.

No hidden agenda

Complimentary & Crossed

Complementary - When message sent fromspecific ego state gets the expected response.

Crossed-When an unexpected response ismade to the stimulus.

Ulterior transactions

Complex

Involves the use of two ego states,

- by the initiator or

- by the responder or

- by both.

Angular & Duplex

Angular

Angular - When two messages are sentsimultaneously from the ego state of one person tothe other.

Involves 3 ego states.

Angling is deliberate & used to persuade / convincethe other.

Duplex

When stimuli & response are open messagewith a hidden message.

Involves 4 ego states.

Games & Rackets

Games- transactions that ends with a bad feelingfor at least one player

Rackets – the unpleasant feelings experiencedafter a game.

Strokes

Whatever is exchanged is called a ‘ stroke’

Can be ‘internal’ & ‘ external’
