If you will be in the U.S. longer than six month and intend to drive, you are required to get an Ohio driver’s license, regardless of whether you have an International Driver’s License.

• You need to pass a written test. Read “The Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Law”

• If you pass the written test, you receive a temporary driver’s license. This requires you to have a licensed driver with you when driving.

• Schedule a road test at one of the testing centers. If you pass the road test you will get an Ohio driver’s license.

Things to do in Obtaining a driver license• When scheduling your road test, choose a Bureau of Motor Vehicles

(BMV) Office you would like to take test at. You will want to choose that close to where you live.

• The BMV offices that close to UA 1. License Agency # 1 – BMV 686 Wolf Ledges Parkway Akron, OH 4431 330-434-3134 2. License Agency # 2 – BMV 1030 E. Tallmadge Ave. Akron, OH, 44310 330-630-7245

On the Test-Day, you’ll be ready to: • Show two acceptable proof of identification

documents, one of which contains your Social Security number (see the list above). If you don’t have a SSN, have your passport and I-20 with you.

• Complete an application• Take a vision test.• Have either your parent or guardian with you to

sign the paperwork (if you’re younger than 18)• Pay any applicable fees. (prepare cash ahead)

• You will have to take two tests during the appointment- Maneuverability Test and Road Test. Maneuverability test is to test your skills on parking a car. The road test is to test your skill on driving in local areas.

Once You Pass:

If you pass the test, you’ll be given a completion certificate from your examiner. Within 60 days take that to a license agency, where you’ll be issued your license on the spot. (You should do this ASAP). Your license fee will vary depending on your situation.

If You Fail:

If you don’t pass both the maneuverability and road tests, you’ll have to wait seven days before trying it again. You’ll only have to take the test you failed. If you fail a test four times, you’ll have to wait six months and then begin the application process over by getting your driver’s permit.
