1. Major pilgrimage destination of Madhya Pradesh. 2. Strong cultural heritage of city reflected through the events
organized annually in the form of Melas (fairs), Sawari and other special occasions.
3. One of the four venues for Kumbh Mela in the country; 4. Strengthened regional and city level road connectivity as an
outcome of investments made under Simhasth Mela 5. Well connected with rail and air through Indore; and 6. Various options for stay including dharamshalas and hotels for
different budget range tourists.
1. Tourism related activities limited to religious pilgrimage only limiting the duration of stay and attracting new tourist groups of different age groups
2. Major dependence of city on religious tourism for economic sustenance
3. Well developed industrial infrastructure in the close vicinity (Dewas, Indore, Pithampur) makes Ujjain a less preferred destination for industries
4. Inadequacy of quality infrastructure to attract foreign tourists 5. Limited efforts towards branding the rich cultural heritage

Aspirations and Goals
Branding Ujjain as Pilgrimage and Heritage Destination • The number of foreign tourists would increase by atleast 100% (the existing base is very low with the number
ranging between 348 to 863 with an average of only about 500 per annum during last four years) in next five years. • The number of domestic tourists would increase by 20% in next 5 years.
Enhanced Economic Opportunities for Ujjain • The number of hotel beds in the city would increase by 10% in next 5 years due to increased demand. • The average duration of stay in Ujjain would increase by 50% in next 5 years. • The number of BPL families in the city would reduce by 25% in next 5 years. • The average income per HH would increase by 33% in next 5 years. Improved Living Environment • The treated piped water supply would be available to 100% population in next 5 years. • The sewerage network would be extended to 50% population in 5 years. • The door-to-door collection facility would be extended to atleast 75% of the city population. • The collection of solid waste and its disposal to the treatment site would increase to over 90% in 5 years. • Entire city would be covered under energy efficient street lighting system in next five years. • The cognizable crime under IPC per lakh population would decrease by 25% in 5 years • The city would meet atleast 10% of the city’s total power requirement through renewable energy sources in 5
years. • The pedestrian and parking facilities including vehicle free zone in the tourist zone would be fully functional in next
5 years. Improved Governance • The number of grievances registered per lakh population would decrease by 33% in 5 years. • The expenditure on municipal electricity bill would be brought down to 25% with implementation of energy
efficient street lighting and net metering of solar energy produced
