Reading Programs at South Western School District

• All students will be part of a morning meeting that strengthens

listening and speaking skills.• Then they listen to a book

read aloud to them, to build on listening, speaking and vocabulary.

Language Arts during the Day

• The major way that students are instructed is through guided reading.

• In guided reading, the teacher chooses a book to instruct the student in main idea, details, summarizing, and other reading strategies.

• The book is at the instructional reading level of the student (which we find out through testing). This means that the book is not too easy, and not too hard, but hard enough to require guidance by the teacher to read.

• The teacher will also cover thinking skills that will prepare the student for reading at higher levels.

Guided Reading

Students participate in writing each day.

Under our Writing Workshop system, students learn a mini-lesson to guide their writing, then get to write on a topic of their choice.

Students learn to write to inform, write to argue, and write to tell a story.

Writing

Each day, every student meets in a small group to receive specific, targeted reading instruction in the area of their need.

These areas could include:◦ Phonics◦ Fluency◦ Comprehension◦ Vocabulary◦ Higher Order Thinking◦ Writing about Reading

Reading Intervention

Thank you for your generous donation to our schools. Books have been purchased for our neediest readers – to increase their reading skills.

If you would like to do more, like becoming one of our Rockin’ Readers, to read to students in any of our buildings, please contact me: Aileen Hower, 632-2500.
