DR. HOUSE’S TIPS FOR DISEASE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

HANGOVER

Symptoms: Severe headache, nausea, dehydration

Prevention: Don’t get drunk

Treatment: No true treatment. Don’t get drunk.

ATHLETE’S FOOT

Symptoms: Growth on feet, severe itchiness of feet, redness and swelling. Can progress to “Jock Itch” if transferred to genitalia.

Prevention: Wear sandals or water shoes in the showers!!! Clean feet well and make sure they dry properly.

Treatment: Certain topical medications requiring treatment for sometimes more than 6 weeks.

MENINGITIS

Symptoms: Severe migraine, severe neckache, swelling of neck, blurred vision.

Prevention: Meningitis vaccinations.

Treatment: Anti-viral drugs, Anti-biotics, Anti-protozoans (depending on type of Meningitis).

MONONUCLEOSIS (MONO)

Symptoms: Fatigue, vomiting, weakness, severe flu-like symptoms, swelling of throat.

Prevention: Don’t drink or eat after someone else, don’t kiss an infected person.

Treatment: Certain drugs to make you feel better while the disease runs its course. Rest.

INFLUENZA (THE FLU)

Symptoms: Fatigue, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, migraine.

Prevention: Influenza vaccine (activated or inactivated).

Treatment: Rest, drugs to make you feel better while the disease runs its course. If caught early enough, certain drugs can fight the disease altogether.

HIV/AIDS, CHLAMYDIA, GONORRHEA, HPV, GENITAL HERPES, ETC

Symptoms: Varies from painful urination, genital warts, genital sores, and immune system deficiency.

Prevention: Abstinence, Condoms. Gardasil for HPV.

Treatment: Some curable with antibiotics, others require antiviral treatment that only help to impaire the progression of the disease, not cure it.

ROOM FLOODING DISORDER

Symptoms: Equipment and property soaked with water, impairment of sleeping and studying ability in room.

Prevention: DO NOT PUT ANYTHING ON THE SPRINKLERS, DO NOT SMOKE IN THE RESIDENCE HALL.

Treatment: WetVac for carpeting and floors, really nothing but basic drying for supplies (not very effective).

ACADEMIC FAILURE

Symptoms: Unsatisfactory grades in coursework, possible academic probation or suspension, parental anger.

Prevention: Go to class every day, study 1-2 hours out of class for every hour in class, take good notes.

Treatment: Same as preventative measures.
