Overview
TheHagenukHFe-mailsystemSEICAM2020Eismorethanastandalonesystem.EquippedwiththeHFmodemMDM3000E,SEICAM2020EcanuseexistingHFradioequipmentandalaptopcomputertodelivermessagesfastanderror-free.ToassuremaximumperformanceSEICAM2020Eusesprovenmilitarystandardwaveforms.ThesystemisdesignedforapplicationswhereanindividualorgrouprequiresInter-nete-mail,buthasnomeanstoestablishaconventionalInternetconnection.Itisdesignedtooperateinoneoftwoconfigurations,aseitherabasestationorasanremotestation.ThebasestationhasInternetconnectivityandtheoutstationisataremotelocationwithoutInternetconnectivity.
ThebasestationisresponsibleforcollectingmailfromtheInternetand/orotherpri-vatenetworksrelayingittoandfromtheremotestation.Typically,thebasestationandremotestationuseidenticalhardware.TheonlydifferenceisintheconfigurationoftheSEICAM2020Esoftwareapplication,andthelocalmailserversthatareprovid-ingtheTCP/IPinterface.EachcomputerrunstheHagenukSEICAM2020EapplicationandaCOTSmailserver.Themailservercollects,sendsandreceivesmailfromboththeInternet/WANandclientapplications(i.e.MSOutlookorNetscapeNavigator).
The SEICAM 2020E application- extractsthemailfromthemailserver,sendsitovertheair,andhandsittothe mailserverattheotherend.Thesystemcanbeconfiguredtoforwardmailfrom eitherindividualaccountsorentiredomains.- displaysanassortmentofinformationrelatingtoeachmessagetransfer.- automaticallycompressesthemessagebeingtransferredon-the-fly,andadapti- velycontrolsthemodemdataratesothatmaximumthroughputisobtained.- providedFAXfunctionbyanadd-inoptionontheCOTSmailserver.Datatransfers arefullyautomatic,andoncethesystemisupandrunning,nooperatorintervention isrequired.
There are two distinct link modes available:1.Inapoint-to-pointlinkAutomaticrepeatrequest(ARQ)retransmitsanyinforma- tioncorruptedbythechannelsothaterror-freecommunicationisassured.2.BroadcastallowsreliableHFdatacommunicationtomultiplestationsatany timebyusingForwardErrorCorrection(FEC)protocols.TheSEICAM2020Edata transferprotocolarbitratesthechannelsothatmultipleusersmaytransferdata efficiently,evenwhenonlyasinglefrequencyisavailable.Eachstationusesa “listen-beforetransmit”strategytopreventtrafficcollisions.Everystationis uniquelyaddressableformessagerouting.
TheHagenukMDM3000Eprovidesthemodemcapabilitiesofthesystem.ItisfullycompliantwithMIL-STD-188-110AandBserial-tone/QAMmodemspecification,NATOSTANAG4285,4415andFSK.Onlyestablishedmilitarystandardwaveformsareemployed.Themodemisavailableasanexternal19”unitaswellasabuilt-inmodulefortheHFradioseries3000.
AuxilliaryequipmentisavailableforupgradingexistinglandbasedHFgroundsta-tions,e.g.SEICAM1001CforinterfacingSEICAM2020Etoexistingaudiolines.

E-mailserviceinmilitaryenvironmentrequiresadditionalfunctionsasnor-mallyprovidedbyknownInternetstand-ards.Thereisaneedthate-mailsbeingcreatedmustbeapprovedbyareleas-ingauthoritybeforesendingittothedestinedparticipant.Specificrout-ingfunctionsarealsonecessary,whichrefertothecharacteristicsofaradionetworkdifferentfromthoseoftheter-restrialsystem.AtypicalSEICAM2020Ecentreconsistsofamail,releaseandroutingservice.Incomingandoutgo-ingmailswillbeexchangedbyaCOTSmailservice.MailsviaHFlinkswillbesubmittedtothereleasingpositionforapprovalbeforeforwardingit.ThisreferstomessagesexchangedbetweenusersoftheterrestrialandtheHFnet-work.
WiththisaSEICAM2020EsetbecomesamilitarygatewaybetweenagroundsubnetandnetworkconsistingofmobileHFusers.E.g.ane-mailcreatedatanypositionintheterrestrialnet-workwillberoutedtotheappropriateradiobasestationtosendthismailtotheareawherethemobileusercanbereached.
ViceversaanymailreceivedatgroundstationswillberoutedtotheSEICAM2020Epositioninordertogatewayittotherecipient.SEICAM2020Email,releaseandrout-ingservicecanbeconfiguredtobeusedinmainnodesofterrestrialHFnet-works.Acomplementaryconfigurationisavailableforshipplatforms,e.g.cor-vettes,frigates,carriersorotherlead-ingships.Alocalareanetworkincludesmultiplemessagehandlingande-mailclientsusingaSEICAM2020Enodeasamail,releaseandroutingservertoexchangemessagesviashipandshoreradioserverstations.
HF e-mail base station
AfixedHFe-mailshorestationistheaccesspointbetweenthelandbaseddatanetworkandmobilestations.HFe-mailsoriginatedeitheratthelandbasedterminalsorshipstationwillberoutedthroughthisnode.Normallyatypicalmilitarynetworkwillconsistofmultiplebasestationsinordertocoverallareasofthetaskforces.Eachofthebasestationsistiedtothecentralsta-tionviathegroundnetworkwhichcol-lectse-mailsfromvariousreceivingstationsorroutese-mailstothedes-tinedtransmittinggroundstation.Agroundstationmaybefittedasabroad-castfacilitytosendorreceivemessagesinbroadcastmode.Inasplit-siteortransmit/receiveconfigurationSTANAG5066protocolssupportsthehighrelia-blemodeofARQ.
