BornandraisedinFortWorth,Texas,PraterwasinthefirstgraduatingclassatTrinityValleySchool(1967).Heat-tendedOklahomaUniversity(pledgingPhiDeltaTheta),theUniversityofTexasinAus-tinandtheUniversityoftheAmericasinMexico. Prater’slifelongpassionwasmusic.Hewasluckyenoughtoplaywithmanybands,includingFortWorth-basedCahoots,winnersoftheMostPromisingNewcomerAwardintheDallas/FortWortharea.TheyopenedforsuchnotablesasWillieNelson,RayWileyHubbard,WaylonJennings,CrystalGayleandLarryGatlin,aswellasTexanslikeDelbertMcClinton,GlenClarkandmanyothers.

AfterCahoots,PraterstartedasuccessfulbrokeragefirminSouthernCalifornia,whereheremaineduntilheretiredtoMexicoin2005. Insearchofabetterlifeinretirement,PraterfirstgaveSanMigueldeAllendealookbutfoundAjijictobeabettertforhim.Here,musicagainbecamehislifeandheenjoyedaneight-yearstintwithlocalgroupTheLuckyDogs.HealsoplayedwithMikeandtheSuspectsbeforefindingahomewiththeOl’CountryBoys. Alongtheway,Praterre-connectedonFacebookwithawomanhedated40yearsago.Hetoldher,“I’veretiredinMexico,comevisit.”Thenhecappeditowith,“Willyoumarryme?” AmelieMarchesseaudidvisitandneverlefthissideforthetwoyearstheyhadtogether.Theymarriedeightmonthsago,livingafairytaleromanticlifeinMexico,filledwithlove,adventure,friendsandtravel,alongwiththeirtwodogsTilleyandGeorgie. Aswellashisadoringwife,PraterleavesbehindsonDamianPhelps,whomheadoredmorethanlifeitself;hissisterandbestfriendLissaPrater,andherhusbandNoelIce,ofFortWorth;stepbrotherStevePrater(Scarlett);half-brotherTonyPrater(Susan);stepsisterJanisPraterandmanydearfriendswhowillneverforgethim. Prater’s34yearsofsobriety,whichmeanteverythingtohim,shouldalsobenoted.HelovedthebeautifulpeoplethathemetinAAalongtheway. PraterwasalsoanavidtennisplayerwiththeChapalagroup. TherewillbetwocelebrationsofPrater’slife:oneinAjijicthisSunday,December15thatTheSpotlightClubfrom3to6PM.TheOl’CountryBoysandmanyotherlocalmusicianswillbethere,alongwithfriendsandfamily.Anopenbarandsnackswillbeavailable.ThesecondcelebrationwillbeinFortWorthinafewmonths.TheexactdateandtimewillbeannouncedonFacebook.BothwillbemusicalextravaganzasinDonPraterstyle.
