Are Domain Names Still Important?

Whenever a new startup venture

or Product is

in the works

 its creators face an age-old

dilemma –

the NAME game.

For most of

us, it’s hard enough just to come up

with a convincing name and commit

to it.

And it gets that much harder

when you consider adding another

all-important layer -

choosing a domain name.

Specifically, you have to

decide which is

more important

to you:

going with the name you

really want, vs.

the one with the best

available (and

memorable) domain name.

In the past, many

successful entrepreneurs

simply picked a name that

would result in the most

concise, original sounding dot-

com, e.g. Google & YAHOO

But that was then.

So is your domain

name still a make or break

issue?

Twitter co-founder

Evan Williams

doesn't think so

We agree that search

engines, auto-complete,

and mobile apps are all

making domain names less

important than they used to

be.

Here’s the deal

But that doesn’t mean

they’re not still pretty

darn

There’s a lot more that goes

into people finding you and

your products.

A good clean .com is

simply the first place people are

going to look for you – even

in a list of search results.

There are plenty of

examples of businesses that

have found clever ways around the

.com issue, but they're

clearly swimming against the

current.

And swimming against the current takes energy. And it’s risky.

So, maybe we don’t

memorize phone

numbers anymore.

But if our phone dies, how do we search for a friend’s number?

We may have to

resort to a directory.

If that friend’s name isn’t listed in the clearest, most familiar form – say, “Francis” instead of “Frank” – you may not recognize it. And that’s frustrating.

The most important takeaway

is this:

The right name for your

product/business is the one that

results in a good domain name

also.

Think about it.

If there’s some reason you can’t get the ideal domain name for your product or business – either it’s being used

or someone already owns it – you could be facing copyright issues down the road anyway.

If it’s available, buy it. Otherwise, keep on playing until you come up with something better.
