Universe

The Universe is defined as everything that physically exists: the entirety of space and time, all forms of matter, energy and momentum, and the physical laws and constants that govern them. However, the term "universe" may be used in slightly different contextual senses, denoting such concepts as the cosmos, the world or Nature.

Virgo Super Cluster

The Virgo Super cluster or Local Super cluster is the galactic super cluster that contains the Local Group, the latter containing, in its turn, the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies.

Local Group

The Local Group is the group of galaxies that includes our galaxy, the Milky Way. The group comprises over 35 galaxies, with its gravitational center located somewhere between the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy.

The group itself is one of many within the Virgo Super cluster (i.e. the Local Super cluster).

Milky Way

The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy that is part of the Local Group of galaxies. and has special significance to humanity as it is the home galaxy of the Solar System.

The plane of the Milky Way galaxy is visible from Earth as a band of light in the night sky, and it is the appearance of this band of light which has inspired the name for our galaxy.

Orion Arm

The Orion Arm is a minor spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy. The Solar System and Earth are within the Orion Arm.

Within the Orion Arm, the solar system and Earth are located close to the inner rim in the Local Bubble, approximately 8000 parsecs (26,000 light-years) from the galactic center

Local Bubble

The Local Bubble is a cavity in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Orion Arm of the Milky Way.

It is at least 300 light years across and the hot diffused gas in the Local Bubble emits X-rays.

Local Interstellar Cloud

The Local Interstellar Cloud, casually called the Local Fluff, is the interstellar cloud (roughly 30 light years across) through which our solar system is currently moving.

The Solar System entered the Local Interstellar Cloud at some time between 44,000 and 150,000 years ago and is expected to remain within it for another 10 to 20,000 years.

Solar System

Solar System consists of the Sun and those celestial objects bound to it by gravity.

These objects are the eight planets and their 166 known moons, four dwarf planets and billions of small bodies, including asteroids, icy Kuiper belt objects, comets, meteoroids, and interplanetary dust.

Earth

Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is the largest of the terrestrial planets in the Solar System in diameter, mass and density.

Home to millions of species, including humans, Earth is the only place in the universe where life is known to exist.
