The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
Unit 1: Effective Work Habits
Lesson Objective and DOL
I will be able to explain the seven habits of highly effective people
Given my knowledge of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, I will list all 7 Habits, choose 4 of the 7, then explain them in 1-2 sentences each with 100% accuracy.
What are the 7 Habits?
1. Be Proactive
2. Begin With the End in Mind
3. First Things First
4. Seek Win-Win Relationships
5. Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw
THINK-PAIR-SHARE
Take 3 minutes and write down what you think these mean
Turn to your neighbor and discuss what you wrote--BE COLLABORATIVE and help each other figure them out!
Be prepared to share with the class what you came up with!
What’s the point?
We should move through stages in life:DependenceIndependenceInterdependence
What do you think?
Are you a product of your choices?
If you had known 5 years ago where your choices would lead you to today, what would you have done differently?
Habit 1: BE PROACTIVE
REactive• “I can’t…”
• “I don’t have time…”
• “Something came up…”
PROactive• “I choose to…”
• “I can…”
• “I will…”
We can CHOOSE how we respond… This is called responsibility!
Habit 2:BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
• You have to know where you are going!
• This is where your goals come in
• If you are constantly thinking about your goals, all of your actions will reflect that and should help you reach them.
Habit 3:FIRST THINGS FIRST
• Setting priorities is essential to success
• After you set all those long-term goals, you have to set short-term goals in order to reach them.
• Urgent and Important are NOT equal!
Time Management Matrix
Important Unimportant
Urgent
1A 1B
Not Urgent
2A 2B
• Say “No” to quadrant 2B activities
• Delegate quadrant 2A activities
Habit 4:SEEK WIN-WIN RELATIONSHIPS
• This is when you look for solutions that satisfy the needs of everyone involved
• What do you need that other people can provide?
• Do you think they need the same things? Different things?
Habit 5:SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD
• Has someone ever given you advice when they didn’t actually understand your problem?
• Did it make you more or less likely to listen?
• If don’t try to understand before trying to get our own point across, others will not want to listen to us.
Habit 6:SYNERGIZE
• COLLABORATION!!
• Value differences:
• Use others’ strengths to your advantage
• “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts”
• What does this mean?
Habit 7:SHARPEN THE SAW
• Take time to find personal renewal in every area of your life:
• Physical, Mental, Social, Emotional, and Spiritual
• Reward:
• More energy, clearer thinking, commitment to values, and connection to those who are important to you
Activity!
Get into 7 even groups (about 2 tables per group)
Talk in your groups for 4 minutes to make sure everyone in the group can explain your habit and give 1-2 examples of how you can apply it to your lives.
Activity!
In your new groups, take turns, starting with Habit 1 and explain what your habit is and how you can apply it to your lives.
You each have 1 minute, for a total of 7 minutes
