Getting to Know Font Families

Each Font Family represents a complete set of characters, letters and symbols for a particular typeface. Font families are divided into 3 categories: Serif, Sans Serif and symbol.

Serif Fonts have a tail or stroke which makes it easier for the eye to recognize words.

Sans Serif Fonts do not have tails and are commonly used in headlines.

Words can express an idea, but the appearance of the type is what drives the point home. After you create the type you can experiment with its appearance by changing its font, size, and color. You can also apply special effects that make it stand out, or appear to pop off the page.

Creating Text On A Path

Suppose you want type to conform to a shape, such as an oval or a free-form you’ve drawn? No problem, just create the shape and add the text.

1. Create the shape using one of Photoshops shape tools2. Add type to a shape by clicking on the horizontal type tool3. When the pointer nears the path, you’ll see that it changes to the

Book Cover Design

ASSIGNMENT: Design Book Cover

1. What is a book cover? What is it used for? What kind of information must be included on it? Think of these questions as you create sketches for an original book cover design. Your sketches are your method of visual brainstorming. They can be as tight (detailed and carefully rendered) or as rough (simple shapes, figures) as you want. The sketches can include words and other notations.

2. Once you decide on a sketch, start to acquire the necessary photographs & images for your book cover.
