DO NOW – 9/28/15• Write 2-3 complete sentences in CN on the

following questions:1) Why is a growth-mind set better than a

fixed-mind set according to Dweck?

2) What steps can you take to foster a growth mindset?.

Topic / Objective & Essential Question

• Topic / Objective: • 1) To analyze the impact of an author’s word

choices, and to cite textual evidence to support inferences.

• Essential Question: • 1) Why are word choices and sentence

structures crucial for writers?

Agenda

1) Announcements2) Review from last week3) Introduce new text – “A Walk to the

Jetty” by Jamaica Kincaid4) Independent Work

Homework

• 1) Journal Entry #4 – due today.• 2) Journal Entry #5 – check the website

according to the finalized schedule.

Journal Collections

• I will collect Journals / Composition books on 10/2 (there will be a total of 5 by then).

“Collections” Textbook

• The first unit contains the theme “Chasing Success.”

• One key idea that the readings will illustrate is that success, although sweet, sometimes requires great sacrifice.

1st Reading “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids” by Carol Dweck (p21)

• Key Takeaways:

* Dweck is illustrating a claim that our society believes that success relies mostly on innate or natural talent.

* She wishes to counter this notion and in-fact develop the idea that success relies more on a “growth” mindset.

Refresher on Citing Textual Evidence

1) We use MLA style (Modern Language Association) for citations in English. Page numbers are used in parentheses without the “p.” with all punctuation outside.

2) Every quote needs to have a signaling or “lead-in” phrase.

Example:

According to Dweck, society believes that “possessing superior intelligence or ability . . . Is a recipe for success” (21).

Refresher on Citing Textual Evidence

3) Citations (quotations) also need to have an explanatory frame. You must paraphrase and explain how the textual evidence functions.

Example:

Dweck argues that “an overemphasis on intellect or talent leaves people vulnerable to failure” (21). Praising talent alone, she says, risks giving children a false impression about the value of hard work and practice.

“A Walk to the Jetty” by Jamaica Kincaid

1) Read the author’s biography on page 31.

QUICK WRITE – 2-3 MINUTES

“A Walk to the Jetty” by Jamaica Kincaid

Q: In what ways do the sentence structures and the choice of words sound like a teenage girl?

A: The sentences are somewhat long and rambling, which reflects the way her thoughts might flow as she lies in bed thinking.

The informal phrase “for I don’t know how long” sounds like everyday speech.

Read lines 11-13

2) In lines 11-13, what is Annie’s attitude toward her life in Angtigua?

TURN AND TALK (2-MIN)

SHARE OUT

Lines 11-13

2) In lines 11-13, what is Annie’s attitude toward her life in Angtigua?

A: Her tone is negative, somewhat impatient and blunt. Staying in Antigua is about the worst thing she can imagine, worse than living “in a cavern and keeping house for seven unruly men.”

Read page 32 – lines 23-39

3) What inferences can you make about Annie’s childhood and about her current feelings? Cite evidence from the text.

Write you answers in CN.

Closing - Summary

• Word choice and sentence structure allow an author to shape and inform meaning for readers.

• Kincaid uses simple, spare language and crisp descriptions to put readers in the minds of a teenage girl.
