Objective: Solve problems involving sales tax and discount

We are going to do three things today!

1. Find the total cost of an item involving sales tax

2. Find the sale price of an item after a discount

3. Find what percent was given off after we have been given the original price and the final price

What is Sales Tax and how is it related to your overall cost?

• A sales tax is a tax charged at the point of purchase for certain goods and services.

• 8.75% in NYS

1. To find the total cost of an item. (Sales tax)

a.Multiply the original cost by the percent (change percent to a decimal)

b. add your answer from the original cost

GOLF A set of golf balls sells for $20 and the sales tax is 5.75%. What is the total cost of the set?

First, find the sales tax.

Next, add the sales tax to the regular price.

Answer: The total cost of the set of golf balls is $21.15

The sales tax is $1.15.

BOOKS A set of three paperback books sells for $35 and the sales tax is 7%. What is the total cost of the set?

Answer: $37.45

Answer: $63.30

regular price is $60 and the sales tax is %?

2. Find the sales price(Discount price)

1. Multiply the cost by the discount percent.

2. Subtract the percentage off from the original price.
