Vocabulary
• Quotient – means the answer to a division problem.
• Divisor – the number you are dividing by. (outside the sign)
• Dividend – the number you are dividing. (under the sign)

Rules for dividing decimals
• Rule 1: the divisor may NEVER be a decimal. It must be a whole number!
• Rule 2: if you move the decimal in the divisor, you MUST move the decimal in the dividend the SAME number of places.
• Rule 3: after moving the decimal in the dividend, shift the decimal UP into your answer, immediately.
• Rule 4: don’t stop dividing until you reach the decimal or go past the decimal.
