First put the large number inside the division bar and the smaller

number outside

For Example: 895 ÷ 5

8 9 55

Now try to divide the number in the hundreds column (8) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 1 x 5 = 5

8 9 55

Now try to divide the number in the hundreds column (8) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 1 x 5 = 5

8 9 55

The 1 is placed in the hundreds column directly above the 8

1

Now try to divide the number in the hundreds column (8) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 1 x 5 = 5

8 9 55

The 1 is placed in the hundreds column directly above the 8

1

The 5 from 1 x5 = 5 goes directly below the 8 -5

Now try to divide the number in the hundreds column (8) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 1 x 5 = 5

8 9 55

The 1 is placed in the hundreds column directly above the 8

1

The 5 from 1 x5 = 5 goes directly below the 8 -5

3The remainder, the difference between 8 & 5, goes under the 5

Now try to divide the number in the hundreds column (8) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 1 x 5 = 5

8 9 55

The 1 is placed in the hundreds column directly above the 8

1

The 5 from 1 x5 = 5 goes directly below the 8 -5

3The remainder, the difference between 8 & 5, goes under the 5

The number from the tens column is then dropped down next to the 39

Now try to divide this new number (39) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 7 x 5 = 35

8 9 551

-53 9

Now try to divide this new number (39) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 7 x 5 = 35

8 9 55

The 7 is placed directly above the 9, in the TENS column

1

-53 9

7

Now try to divide this new number (39) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 7 x 5 = 35

8 9 55

The 7 is placed directly above the 9, in the TENS column

1

The 35 from 7 x5 = 35 goes directly below the 39

-53 9

7

-3 5

Now try to divide this new number (39) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 7 x 5 = 35

8 9 55

The 7 is placed directly above the 9, in the TENS column

1

The 35 from 7 x5 = 35 goes directly below the 39

-53

The remainder, the difference between 39 & 35, goes under the 35

9

7

-3 54

Now try to divide this new number (39) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 7 x 5 = 35

8 9 55

The 7 is placed directly above the 9, in the TENS column

1

The 35 from 7 x5 = 35 goes directly below the 39

-53

The remainder, the difference between 39 & 35, goes under the 35

The number from the units column is then dropped down next to the 4

9

7

-3 54 5

Now try to divide this new number (45) by 5: In this case, 9 x 5 = 4 5

8 9 551

-53 9

7

-3 54 5

Now try to divide this new number (45) by 5: In this case, 9 x 5 = 4 5

8 9 55

The 9 is placed directly above the 5, in the UNITS column

1

-53 9

7

-3 54 5

9

Now try to divide this new number (45) by 5: In this case, 9 x 5 = 4 5

8 9 55

The 9 is placed directly above the 5, in the UNITS column

1

The 45 from 9 x5 = 45 goes directly below the 45

-53 9

7

-3 54 5

9

-4 5

Now try to divide this new number (45) by 5: In this case, 9 x 5 = 4 5

8 9 55

The 9 is placed directly above the 5, in the UNITS column

1

The 45 from 9 x5 = 45 goes directly below the 45

-53

In this question there is no remainder,

9

7

-3 54 5

9

-4 50 so 895 ÷ 5 = 179

Now try to divide this new number (45) by 5: In this case, 9 x 5 = 4 5

8 9 55

The 9 is placed directly above the 5, in the UNITS column

1

The 45 from 9 x5 = 45 goes directly below the 45

-53

In this question there is no remainder,

9

7

-3 54 5

9

-4 50 so 895 ÷ 5 = 179
