Disney's creative strategy

Dreamer, Realistic,CriticInspired by Walt Disney's mantra of "if you can dreamyou can do it"

Three different Walts: the dreamer, the realist, andthe spoiler.

Parallel thinking: used to generate, evaluate, critique ideasand solve problems.

Bridges the gap between imagination and reality.

“I can never stand still. I mustexplore and experiment. I am never

satisfied with my work. I resentlimitations.” – Walt Disney

“We cannot do fantastic thingsunless we know what is real and

what is not” – Walt Disney

"Whenever I go on a ride, I'm alwaysthinking of what's wrong with the

thing and how it can be improved."" –Walt Disney

Dreamer

What do we want? What is the solution?

How do we imagine the solution? What are the benefits of this solution?

YOU DONT WANTANYONE

TO STOP YOU OR ANYCRITICAL VOICE

Realistic

How can we apply this idea in reality? What is the action plan?

Whats the timeline? How to evaluate the idea?

YOU DONT NEED ANYFLIGHTS OR FANTASIES

Critic

What could be wrong with the idea? What is missing?

Why cannot we apply it?What are the weaknesses in the plan?FALL OUT OF LOVE WITHYOUR OWN INGENIOUS

MAKE IT BETTER

v/sDisney's Strategy 6 Thinking Hats

Create Evaluate

Process Parallel

1 group - 3 roles 6 persons - 6 roles

Constant sequence Any sequence

No disagreement Often disagreement

No influencing Chance of influencing

ChallengesWhat might come in way?

A dreamer without a realistcannot turn ideas intotangible expressions. A critic and a dreamerwithout a realist just becomestuck in a perpetualconflict. A dreamer and a realistmight create things, but theymight not achieve a highdegree of quality without acritic.

ChallengesOther

It is important to see who isinvolved in this procedure, noteveryone is creative orimaginative. When we go through eachrole, the creativity aspect ofthe entire process mightdiminish. While using this strategy ingroups, it's not necessary thatall group members haveadopted to the same role atthe same stage

RECOMMENDATIONS

The critic can be between the Dreamerand the Realistic, in order to avoidwastage of resources and time.
