Digital Footprints

People used to think that on the internet no one knew who you were.

We read the internet and were annonymous

But today, we leave a trail behind us

Electronic payments, registrations etc,

In 2008 we now deliberately leave our digital footprints in the sand. We leave our mark to say “I was here”

For teenagers raised on reality TV, it seems perfectly natural and even necessary to disclose opinions, and information, where they went last night and what they looked like when they got up this morning.

Pew Internet Project, says two thirds of online teens are “content creators” which means they use videos, photos, blogs and message boards to divulge personal information about their lives.

Creating content is ridiculously easy. Its is instant. It is portable. It has zero costs and massive social benefits to teens to be always on and always connected to their peers and friends.

Digital Reputation

For anyone over thirty, all this self-revelation is too much information.At the very least, it’s embarrassing and, at the worst, it could be compromising. Most adults still believe in the value of privacy which, at its simplest, means you get to control what different people know about you.

Teens don’t think about it.

Many teens have become relatively savvy about sharing details that might make them vulnerable to predators. Still, posting something they later regret is becoming a rite of passage for young people.

They post ‘instant’ responses to anythingthat they consider an attack on their ‘digital reputation’ - ‘flame wars’

If no one is teaching them how to act,how to present themselves, then we are

not allowed to be shocked at what they do.
