Digital image processing is the use of computer algorithms to perform image processing on digital images

As a subcategory or field of digital signal processing, digital image processing has many advantages over analog image processing.

INTRODUCTION

A digital image is a representation of a two-dimensional image as a finite set of digital values, called picture elements or pixels

Digitization implies that a digital image is an approximation of a real scene

• Since the digital image is “invisible” it must be prepared for viewing on one or more output device (laser printer, monitor etc.)

• The digital image can be optimized for the application by enhancing or altering the appearance of structures within it (based on: body part, diagnostic task, viewing preferences etc.)

• It has vast range of applications in fields of Astronomy, Defense, Research, Forensics etc…
