DIGESTION & MACROMOLECULES

Take NOTES on --- PAGE 21 --- Large

WHY DO WE NEED TO EAT?

• Our body is mostly water, but we cannot survive off just water and electrolytes/vitamins (from plasma)

• We need to eat FOOD for ENERGY (used for growing, healing, and daily functions)

WHY DO WE NEED TO EAT?

• Food is also made out of cells!!

BASICS of DIGESTION

• When we digest food, we break it down into smaller parts.

Our body rebuilds those smaller parts into the kinds of cells and things WE need.

This can easily be done because all living things are made of only four types of major big molecules!

WHAT ARE MACROMOLECULES?

• Macromolecules are large molecules. There are three major macromolecules that come from our food! • Macromolecules can be broken down even further… H

O H

In science, all things are made from smaller parts… LIKE THIS:

Organisms are made from small cells.

Cells are made from smaller parts called macromolecules.

NOTE: A macromolecule is a type of biological

POLYMER.

Macromolecules (POLYMERS) are made from smaller parts called monomers.

The human body’s monomers are made of five key elements: CHNOPS!!!

FYI: POLYMERS The science word for something made of small parts •  In this class, Polymer ó Macromolecule. •  Macromolecules are polymers! Megazord is a polymer!

When our body makes new polymers, this process is called POLYMERIZATION!

Name of Monomer

Elements found in Monomer (CHNOPS?)

1. Carbohydyrates

2. Lipids AKA FATS

3. Proteins
